Job Title: California Employment Law Attorney

Location: Remote with occasional travel required; candidate must reside in one of the following states:Arizona, Colorado, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, or Wyoming

Type: Fulltime, exempt

Base Pay: $86,458.00 - $89,943 annually

Reports To: Director of Arizona, California, and Utah Membership

Position Summary

The California Employment Law Attorney will serve as the touchpoint for member companies on all aspects of California employment law compliance. The ideal candidate will be able deliver accurate employment law advice and counsel while fostering strong relationships with employers by being responsive, reliable, and attentive to their legal needs and priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise and counsel employers regarding complex California legal issues, recognizing and addressing potential risks with situations including EEO/Civil Rights, wage and hour matters, leaves of absence, performance documentation, discipline, termination, layoffs, employee handbooks, employment agreements, confidentiality agreements, Cal/OSHA workplace safety-issues, and other employment law matters.
  • Review California employee handbooks, manuals, policies, and procedures from a legal perspective.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day workflow of the California Legal Services team.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and prospective members who have California operations, discuss the service line and be able to identify how the services fit the needs of member organizations.
  • Work with Director to track annual department revenue based on established goals.
  • Create and update California member resources including white papers, sample policies, agreements, templates webinars, trainings, and newsletters.
  • Ability to manage legal and business priorities and help build consensus among multiple stakeholders (e.g., Human Resources professionals and management teams).
  • Collaborate effectively with other attorneys and staff to strategize and develop legal solutions, sharing insights, and leveraging collective expertise to provide exceptional service to members.
  • Prepare and deliver in-person and virtual training to organizations on various topics including harassment, discrimination, wage and hour, family and medical leave, performance documentation, etc.
  • Represent member organizations in administrative hearing processes including civil rights charges and wage claims, and prelitigation employment matters.

Qualifications/Education

  • Juris Doctorate degree (J.D.) and California Bar admission is required. Multistate licensure is a plus.
  • 3 years of California employment law experience is preferred.
  • Prior management of business development and/or budgets is a plus.
  • Proficient with word-processing, presentation, spreadsheet and database software (E.g. Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Periodic travel required for this role.
