Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is Hiring a Tax Policy Fellow Near Washington, DC

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (Committee) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization devoted to educating policymakers, the media and citizens about the fiscal challenges facing the country, as well as the possible solutions. The Committee is made up of some of the nation's leading budget experts including many of the past Chairmen and Directors of the Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Government Accountability Office.

With several looming tax expirations in 2025, the Committee is hiring a Tax Policy Fellow to contribute to the organization’s creation and analysis of policy options and proposals related to evaluating budgetary costs, distributional effects, and economic impact. The fellow will serve as a member of the policy team primarily tasked with a focus on tax policy, but opportunities to contribute to other policy analysis will also be available. This position will report to the Senior Vice President and Senior Policy Director with supervision by the Policy Director.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or conduct analysis of tax policy options and proposals
  • Evaluate academic literature and external research related to the budgetary cost, distributional effects, and economic impacts of various tax policy proposals
  • Participate in new policy design efforts related to changes to the tax code
  • Write policy papers, issue briefs, op-eds, background memos, and blog posts
  • Estimate and extrapolate various budgetary estimates
  • Assist media, external groups, and lawmakers on tax policy issues

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Prior knowledge, experience, and expertise with tax policy, including familiarity with JCT documents
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of tax policy research experience, but mid-career or very experienced candidates are also desired
  • Proven quantitative, analytical, and research skills, especially related to analyzing and estimating tax policy proposals
  • Proven ability to work in fast-paced team environments
  • Strong writing skills, especially the ability to communicate policy ideas and legislative proposals concisely and effectively to a diverse range of audiences
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher, with major in economics, public policy, or a related field preferred
