JOB
Operates medium-sized motorized construction equipment as a major work assignment to excavate and grade earth and to transport persons, materials, equipment and supplies used in the construction, repair and maintenance of highways, buildings, and other governmental installations or projects; and performs other duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is distinguished by its responsibility for operating medium-sized motorized equipment such as street sweepers, tractor loaders of up to and including bucket capacity of 1.25 cubic yards, pay loaders, tow wagons, flatbed and dump trucks of over 5 ton factory rated capacity, oil or water wagons of over 1200 gallon capacity, rubber-tired roustabout cranes, trench rollers or variable or fixed weight rollers of 4 to 5 ton capacity, stationary or portable rock crusher and other similar medium-sized motorized equipment as a major work assignment and occasionally operates heavy motorized equipment as an incidental work assignment or for the purpose of learning to operate such equipment efficiently.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.Loads and unloads materials such as mud, cinders, earth, sand, rock and other materials in a dump truck or stock pile.Operates a medium-sized gas or diesel-powered D-6 bulldozer and clears land of brush and small trees.Operates a large street sweeper and sweeps rubbish, glass, nails and leaves from highways.Operates a pay loader and scoops, picks up and dumps earth, sand and gravel in dump truck or in a stock pile.Operates a trench roller and rolls sub-base, base course, leveling course and wearing surface of streets and highways where surface of highway is being widened.Operates a roustabout crane and hoists and moves objects such as timber, structural steel and parts of machinery.Operates a 4 to 5 ton roller and rolls ground surface of streets and highways in conjunction with highway maintenance work.Operates a medium-sized dump truck and hauls rock, sand, gravel, earth, asphaltic concrete and cold mix to construction sites.Drives an oil wagon of 1200 gallon capacity and over, and hauls and distributes oil on gravel and dirt roads which have been surfaced by a motor patrol grader.Checks motorized equipment daily.Refills fuel tank with diesel oil, or gasoline and crankcase with lubrication oil.Replaces lubrication and fuel filter elements.Cleans air filters.Adjusts and tightens bolts and checks cables and hydraulic systems.Checks and adjusts brakes; repairs and changes tires.Assists automotive mechanic in making field repairs for medium-sized motorized equipment operated such as removing fuel pumps, carburetors and repairing engine fuel pump, starting motor, transmission or power takeoff.Occasionally operate heavy motorized equipment which are listed under Equipment Operator IV during emergency and for the purpose of learning to operate such equipment efficiently.Assists in loading or unloading materials into trucks.Assists in spreading or leveling asphaltic concrete or other macadamized or bitumuls materials.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
SKILLS ASSESSMENT: Qualified applicants will be required to take an online assessment. Applicants are required to test alone in a quiet, distraction-free area using a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection, a microphone, a webcam (internal or external), and a Windows or Apple Operating System. Applicants who do not meet the system requirements will be provided an opportunity to take the online assessment on site.
