Medical Assistant Training-on-the-Job (MATOJ)

General Description:

The TMB Learning Institute in collaboration with the Medical Department at Caring Health Center (CHC) is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications from interested candidates who wish to participate in its Training-on-the-Job (TOJ) program for Medical Assistants. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position. 

As a Medical Assistant Training on the on-the-job employee-learner, candidates will have access to an accredited medical assistant training curriculum, which is asynchronous and virtually accessible. This multifaceted program will give candidates access to the virtual medical assisting training curriculum provided on-site at the Tania M. Barber Learning Institute during work hours. After completion of the asynchronous curriculum, candidates will have the opportunity to practice their skills hands-on during their Clinical Learning Experience training. 

As a program of the Tania M. Barber Learning Institute candidates will also engage with the TMBLI Workforce Equity curriculum and be supported as “employee-learners” by staff at the TMBLI. This will include ongoing support and training in regard to professional development, career aspirations, and equity framing, alongside job-specific content training through the medical assistant training curriculum led by Caring Health Center Faculty In-Residence. The cost of this training is covered by the Caring Health Center. 

As a result, TOJ candidates at CHC will receive a well-rounded education as preparation for licensure exams, and to excel in clinical practice.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate.

  • Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must not have previous experience as a medical assistant.

  • Ability to learn and work accurately, independently, and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

  • Availability for work full-time, 8:30 am-5 pm - Monday - Friday and Saturdays 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Occasionally, there may be a need to work beyond the scheduled hours to complete procedures and/or assist other staff. 

  • Access to reliable transportation to move between the different Caring Health Center clinic locations including the Tania M. Barber Learning Institute (TMB LI) at 473 Sumner Avenue as needed.

Principle Responsibilities as a TMB Learning Institute Medical Assistant TOJ Employee- Learner

  • Actively participate in a variety of on-site learning and engagement as a part of the TMB Learning Institute MATOJ program. 

  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities offered by the Caring Health Center Human Resource Department and the Office for Access and Equity (OAE). 

  • Engage in a collaborative learning process alongside a group of peer employee-learners.

  • Ability to engage in critical thinking and interest in independent learning. 

  • Maintain clear communication with TMB LI, Medical Department, and Human Resources Team Members (respectively) regarding schedule and access needs.

  • Care for CHC learning materials provided as a part of accessing your learning experience (e.g. laptop, headphones, and training materials).

  • Demonstrate honesty and integrity in all aspects of engagement in the program, including involvement with CHC staff, vendors, patients, and other TOJ participants. 

  • Maintain an organized, safe learning and working environment.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties as a Medical Assistant:

  • Actively interact positively with patients, personnel, visitors, and the general public.

  • Actively participates in staff meetings.

  • Work as part of a team.

  • Ability to travel to different CHC sites when required.

  • Work occasional extended clinic hours including late nights and weekends between any Caring Health Center site when needed.

  • Ability to participate in off-site clinics (flu clinic, COVID clinic).

Patient Prepping:

  1. In accordance with established procedures, take and record vital signs including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature for all visits.

  2. Perform tests, i.e., EKG, vision and audio screening, and oxygen saturation, height, and weight, as requested.

  3. Perform social determinants of health (SDOH) screening and additional screeners as required. 

  4. Prepare the exam room and assist with the exam as needed.

  5. Perform other duties deemed necessary by the Site Manager or Supervisor.

  6. Oversee the provider's schedule and management of patient flow.

  7. Maintain confidentiality of all health center information.

  8. Schedule patient appointments and follow-ups.

  9. Comply with H.I.P.A.A. regulations.

Maintenance of lab/work area:

  1. Keep work areas, exam rooms, and lab areas clean and orderly.

  2. Maintain Universal Precautions at all times and follow protocols related to blood/body fluid spills.

  3. Order lab and clinic supplies as needed.

  4. Inspect supplies in exam rooms and supply closets minimally every quarter and document in log books.

Laboratory Assistance:

  1. Review the order sheet.

  2. Draw, perform, and/or collect all lab specimens ensuring specimen integrity.

  3. Become familiar with blood collection and drawing. 

  4. Perform urinalysis, hcg, strep testing, COVID, finger stick blood glucose, hgb, and lead testing, tox screenings, and other testing. 

  5. Complete correct lab requisition according to insurance/grant.

  6. Record completed lab work in lab logs daily.

  7. Autoclave and record weekly spore count.

ACO:

  1. Assist with QI projects to improve and maintain quality measures for HRSA, UDS, NCC, NCQA, ACO, and PCMH.

This position also requires the ability to work at a computer workstation and some knowledge of a keyboard. From time to time, it also requires the ability to work long and arduous hours.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required:

  • To do detailed work using arms, hands, and fingers to handle and feel objects worked with.

  • Intermittently is required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, bend and reach throughout the day.

  • Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is needed.

  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, department perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be physically able to administer CPR.

  • May have to lift up to 25 pounds.
