What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Technician - B position at Zoom Automotive?
About Zoom Automotive
Zoom Automotive is an independent repair shop in Lynchburg, VA - not a chain, not a dealer. We run a modern Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) workflow and we're growing our team. We're hiring a B-Tech who can handle the bread-and-butter mechanical work that keeps our bays moving and is ready to grow into A-Tech-level diagnostics.
What You'll Do
As our B-Tech, you'll handle the majority of mechanical repairs that come through the shop and back up our A-techs on bigger jobs:
Perform brake jobs (pads, rotors, calipers, hydraulic service) and suspension work (struts, shocks, control arms, tie rods, ball joints)
Replace alternators, starters, water pumps, belts, hoses, and other wear components
Diagnose and repair common driveability and electrical issues using scan tools
Perform wheel alignments, tire mounting, balancing, and TPMS service
Handle cooling system service, fluid exchanges, and timing component replacement on common platforms
Complete digital vehicle inspections (DVI) with photos and notes; communicate findings clearly to the service writer
Support A-techs on advanced diagnostics, powertrain, and ADAS-related work to keep building your skills
Keep your bay, tools, and the shop clean and organized
What We're Looking For
We hire for skill, attitude, and aptitude. A B-Tech at Zoom is past the lube-tech stage and confident on routine mechanical work, with the curiosity to keep climbing.
2 years of hands-on automotive repair experience (independent shop, dealer, or franchise)
Comfortable diagnosing and repairing brakes, suspension, steering, cooling, and basic electrical systems
Able to read wiring diagrams and use a scan tool for codes, live data, and basic bi-directional tests
Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (we move and occasionally test-drive customer vehicles)
Authorization to work in the United States
Reliable transportation and consistent attendance
Your own basic hand tools (we provide a tool allowance to help you keep building your set)
Nice to Have
These aren't required, but each one moves you up in the pay range and shortens your path to A-Tech:
ASE certifications (A4 Suspension & Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A8 Engine Performance, etc.)
Virginia State Safety Inspector license
EPA 609 (refrigerant handling) certification
Experience with diesel engines or European vehicles
Familiarity with ADAS calibration concepts
Experience with shop management systems and digital inspection tools
Compensation & Perks
Pay: $16.00 – $24.00 per hour, depending on experience and certifications. More verified experience and ASE certs = more pay within the band. Final rate discussed during the phone screen.
Production bonus opportunity: Once ramped, you'll be eligible for production-based bonuses on top of your hourly rate. This is hourly, not flat-rate - your hourly wage is guaranteed regardless of bay volume.
Tool allowance to help you keep building your set
Paid on-the-clock training and ASE test reimbursement for passed exams
Mentorship from experienced A-techs
Uniforms provided after introductory period
Clear growth path: B-Tech to A-Tech, with increasing pay and bonus opportunity
Real work/life balance: no nights, no weekends, no overtime, no on-call
