Job Purpose:
The Summer Safari Camp Educator position advances the mission of Zoo Atlanta by creating experiences that engage, educate, and energize program participants to action. Specifically, Summer Camp Educators facilitate learning for campers ages Kindergarten-8th graders (5-14 years old) using interactive, STEAM-based curriculum that showcases Zoo Atlanta’s work to conserve wildlife and wild places; how to protect our environment; and how every person can make a difference in these areas. This is a full-time, seasonal position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Enthusiastically engage campers by leading them through environmental and conservation education lessons, Zoo tours, hands-on projects, games, and activities for age groups ranging from Kindergarten-Rising 8th Graders (5-14 years).
  • Facilitate extended care games and activities with campers.
  • Document all camp issues as needed including camper behavior and incidents.
  • Complete assigned responsibilities including set-up, clean-up, and program maintenance. Assist with daily check-in and check-out.
  • Supervise lunchtime activities.
  • Build and maintain a respectful working rapport with co-workers, campers and parents/guardians.
  • Work in a diverse team environment, creating a safe and fun experience for children of all backgrounds.
  • Help maintain clean and safe spaces and follow all safety protocols.
  • Preparation and breakdown of program materials.
  • Know and follow all emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Must attend all Zoo Atlanta mandatory training.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Work with and mentor Volunteens (teenage volunteers).
  • Ensure timely communications via email and/or cell phone with program supervisor and manager.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Schedule
- Minimum 9 out of 10 camp weeks must be available plus all training dates

  • Normal Weekly Schedule: Monday-Friday
  • Training (in person): Saturday, May 9, 2026; Saturday, May 16, 2026; Monday, May 18, 2026 – Friday, May 22, 2026, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Camp: Tuesday, May 26, 2026 – Friday, July 31, 2026 (no camp July 4th)
  • Full time, seasonal, non-benefited
  • All requests for time off must be approved in advance by Program Supervisor or Manager and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.


Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have spent at least one full year out of High School
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and TB test
  • Must be able to spend 50% or more of the workday standing/walking
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with interpretation, formal or informal education in a zoological, museum, camp, school, non-profit or related setting
  • Experience working with children and families
  • Must be energetic, creative, responsible, and dependable and have an enthusiasm for wildlife and children.
  • Excellent oral communication skills required
  • Professional dress, appearance, and conduct

Education:

  • Must have High School or GED Diploma.
  • One year of college or professional experience in a related field.
  • Animal, science, or education academic training in a formal or informal setting preferred.


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to spend 50% or more of the workday standing/walking
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to repeatedly lift and/or push 30 pounds.
