Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering & Technology team. In this role, you will lead the design and testing of mechanical components and systems that support Zolo’s combustion monitoring platforms. As a key member of the team you will be the go-to person for mechanical engineering solutions from concept through commercialization.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineers and cross-functional teams to implement and support mechanical designs that interface with electronics, instrumentation, and deployed systems. The focus of this role is new product development, supporting manufacturing, service, and ongoing product enhancements.
This position is well suited for experienced mechanical engineers interested in systems-oriented development and hardware-adjacent mechanisms, working primarily from an office with occasional hybrid flexibility.
What You’ll Work On
- Mechanical designs supporting laser-based combustion monitoring systems used in industrial applications
- Mechanical components that interface with sensors, instruments, and hardware subsystems
- Iterative improvements informed by testing, service feedback, and product priorities
Key Responsibilities
Core Engineering Responsibilities
- Design and test reliable mechanical components and systems, following established design practices.
- Implement mechanical design features and enhancements based on defined requirements and design guidance.
- Contribute to documentation and testing to support long-term maintainability.
Systems & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with hardware/software engineers, systems integration, service, and production teams to support integrated solutions.
- Assist with hardware–software integration and internal validation efforts.
Engineering Practices & Growth
- Write clear and well-documented design documentation.
- Follow established design development standards and contribute to continuous improvement of tools and practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (MS preferred) in Mechanical or Opto-Mechanical Engineering
- 8 years of hands-on mechanical engineering design in an industrial environment
- Technically savvy; must be able to discuss, understand and make decisions regarding a wide array of mechanical engineering considerations
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, Solidworks PDM, and associated structural and finite analyses. CSWA or CSWP Certification desirable.
- GD&T per ASME Y14.5 subject matter expert.
- Knowledge of electronics packaging, fabrication and assembly methods, and product servicing needs.
- Experience with product BOM structuring and ERP systems, Design FMEA, Root-Cause Analysis, rapid prototyping, and DFX.
- Familiarity with ISO, UL/CE, ATEX, and other international requirements and standards.
- Successful product lifecycle experience. Working knowledge of stage/phase gate and Agile product development processes.
- Previous experience with fiber optics and laser systems (desirable).
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating effectively with a team.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Location
This role is based in Louisville, CO.
Extensive travel is not expected and would be limited to rare, planned occasions if needed.
