Position Summary

The Paper Wrap Person is responsible for preparing and securely wrapping lumber units for storage, handling, and shipment. This position helps protect finished products from damage and exposure while ensuring that units are properly identified, documented, and prepared according to company and customer requirements.

The Paper Wrap Person works as part of the production team under the direction of the department supervisor. Attention to detail, safe work practices, product quality, accurate documentation, and teamwork are essential to this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Product Preparation and Wrapping

  • Prepare lumber units for wrapping according to established company procedures and order requirements.
  • Remove stickers, tags, or other materials from units as required before wrapping.
  • Inspect units before wrapping and report obvious product, packaging, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Safely and neatly install paper wrap around lumber units to provide appropriate protection.
  • Properly position and secure paper wrap before final packaging or handling.
  • Staple tabs over the paper wrap at approximately two-foot intervals along the length of the unit, or as otherwise required by established packaging specifications.
  • Ensure missing boards or other unit conditions are marked according to established procedures.
  • Take reasonable care to prevent damage to lumber and finished products during the wrapping and packaging process.
  • Ensure completed units are neat, secure, and prepared for the next stage of handling or shipment.

Identification and Documentation

  • Verify unit identification information before completing required paperwork.
  • Record the tag number, unit dimensions, order number, and other required information accurately on the paper wrap report.
  • Ensure required markings and identification remain visible or are properly transferred to the wrapped unit.
  • Promptly report missing, incorrect, or questionable unit information to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and timely records associated with assigned work.

Production Support

  • Check with the Sawmill Supervisor for special projects, production priorities, or additional assignments.
  • Coordinate with co-workers to support efficient movement and completion of lumber units.
  • Assist other departments or production areas when requested.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support production and operational needs.

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Follow all company safety rules, procedures, and established safe-work practices.
  • Know and follow applicable lockout/tagout procedures associated with assigned job duties.
  • Use hand tools, staplers, packaging equipment, and other assigned equipment safely and only as trained and authorized.
  • Immediately report equipment malfunctions, machinery defects, damaged tools, or other equipment concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, near misses, or potential safety risks.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.
  • Keep walkways and work areas free of unnecessary packaging materials and other potential hazards.
  • Properly dispose of or store paper wrap, strapping, tags, stickers, and other packaging materials.
  • Use production downtime productively for cleanup, organization, and approved minor maintenance.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

To successfully perform this position, an employee must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. Qualifications include:

  • Basic understanding of sawmill or lumber manufacturing operations.
  • Ability to learn and follow company packaging and paper-wrapping procedures.
  • Ability to recognize basic product, packaging, and identification requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing neat and properly wrapped units.
  • Ability to accurately record unit and order information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and contribute to a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with limited supervision.
  • Commitment to following and promoting company safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, alternate shifts, or provide off-shift coverage when required.
