Part-Time Director of Music
Position Summary: Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, New Jersey, has a rich history of over 300 years of worship, and from the start music has been a central part of how we express our faith. Today our members enjoy the sounds of our talented and dynamic Parish and Handbell Choirs, and music is an important part of the faith formation of our youth. We are looking for a Director of Music to carry on a strong legacy and develop our music programming to keep this vital ministry vibrant and meaningful.

About the Position
The Director of Music plays a vital role in leading and overseeing all aspects of our church music program. The Director will be responsible for planning, directing, and supervising music for our weekly worship services all year, as well as leading our Parish and Handbell Choirs in weekly rehearsals during the program year (September – early June). Reports to Zion’s pastor. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on our congregation and foster a love for sacred music.
Responsibilities
- Schedule, lead, and conduct the Parish Choir and Handbell Choir in rehearsals and performances, and build the choirs by training, mentoring, and recruiting
- Collaborate with the Pastor on music selection and planning for weekly and holiday worship services, ensuring high-quality and appropriate selections
- Collaborate with the Director of Youth & Family Ministry to involve young people and their families in music ministry
- Oversee and manage the budget for Worship & Music related resources
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment
- Other duties related to the Worship & Music ministry at Zion as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music or Music Education (preferred)
- Excellent musicianship with proficiency in keyboard skills (piano and organ)
- Note: Our organ is from 1864 and has been lovingly maintained as a functioning historical element.
- Ability to lead rehearsals effectively and motivate singers of all skill levels
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers
- Willingness to learn to lead a handbell choir from an experienced group
Schedule and Compensation
The position is part-time and requires 15 hours per week, which may vary with holiday seasons and summer schedules. Please note: through the summer months, choirs take a hiatus and Sunday worship moves from two services (8:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.) to one service (9:30 a.m.).
Salary Range: $25,000- $30,000, commensurate with experience.
