The Summer 2026 STEM Internship Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is designed to provide educational and research opportunities for college students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you build and gain knowledge in STEM subject areas as you apply your education, talent, and skills in a variety of settings.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:
- Understanding how to collaborate with team members on research projects
- Developing skills in data collection and analysis
- Deepening understanding of a particular STEM field
- Communicating scientific results through presentations and written materials
Where will I be located?
Monterey, California
What is the anticipated start date?
Interns on the semester system will start on June 1, 2026. Interns on the quarter system will start on June 15, 2026
What is the appointment length?
This internship appointment is for ten contiguous weeks. Interns appointed are expected to participate 40 hours a week during their internship and must be able to participate in the full duration of the internship term. The internship will end with a presentation of your research and experience on August 07, 2026 (for those starting June 1, 2026) or August 21, 2026 (for those starting June 15, 2026).
What are the provisions?
You will receive a total stipend of $7,500 for this ten-week internship.

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
