What are the responsibilities and job description for the Natural Resources Specialist position at Zintellect?

The U.S. Army Environmental Command (AEC) is offering an undergraduate/post Bachelor's internship at Fort Huachuca, Arizona

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be a part of wide array of tasks pertaining to government natural resource management in forestry, wildlife and archaeology programs on Fort Huachuca. You may also have the opportunity to develop and carry out small-scale projects depending on your interests.

Why should I apply?

As an ORISE participant you will have the opportunity to be involved in field work and data collection such as surveys. Public outreach opportunities are possible and happen occasionally throughout the year (e.g. public/school tours and presentations, preparing exhibits, etc.) Training opportunities are provided, at minimum, in Section 106 compliance, ATV use, ArcGIS Army Standards, GPS unit use, wildfire courses and certifications and unexploded ordnance (UXO) safety and identification. The participant will be exposed to different aspects of these programs such as big game management, nuisance wildlife, wild and prescribed fire management, and archaeologic surveys.

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate, the preferred start date is fall 2024 (October preferably). Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the appointment provisions?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USACE. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USACE

Sound natural resources stewardship through ecosystem management is the underlying approach, and elements of the program include forest management, fish and wildlife (nongame and game), threatened and endangered species, habitat and community management, environmental awareness and environmental protection.  Fort Huachuca is an Army installation in southeastern Arizona, adjacent to the town of Sierra Vista.  The installation encompasses 80,000 acres across several environmental zones. The Huachuca Mountains form the Fort’s western boundary, and the majority of the installation resides in a high-elevation (4,600ft AMSL on average) desert grassland environment. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
