The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is offering a Post Doctoral translational large animal research fellowship in Burn Resuscitation Research at Joint Base San Antonio. This research fellowship is for eligible candidates who would like to learn and gain experience in how to plan and perform large animal research and/or burn research in a military medical environment.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers committed to optimizing combat casualty care through translational research. You will engage in large animal research focused on burn resuscitation within the Organ Support and Automation Technologies Department at USAISR. You will participate in an ongoing research project using the USAISR’s established swine burn model to examine the effect of automated resuscitation on outcomes following severe burn and learn to carry out hemorrhagic shock resuscitation research in the automation space using an established model. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in other research projects and receive broad learning exposure on medical automation for critical care.

  • Learning IACUC-approved large animal burn research protocols while gaining experience in a military environment and protocols.
  • Gaining experience and skills in large animal surgical procedures, including open laparotomy and percutaneous vascular access placement.
  • Learning to operate advanced, experimental automated medical systems, including an automated burn resuscitation system, a hemorrhagic shock resuscitation system, a ventilator control system and/or an anesthesia control system.
  • Disseminating results of studies through publications and presentations at national conferences.
  • Learning about clinical and health care practices in military medicine and military medical research.
  • Participating in the research and development of new medical engineering products.

What is the anticipated start date?

The USAISR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the provisions? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
