Position Summary
Zickel Flooring is seeking a motivated Financial Controller to oversee and strengthen our financial operations. This full-time, on-site role is based in our Fenton, MO office. It is an excellent opportunity for a Staff Accountant or mid-level accounting professional looking to step into a broader leadership-track role with increasing responsibility over time.
The Financial Controller will handle billings, receivables, and pay applications; manage daily accounting functions; maintain financial records; and support leadership with reporting and analysis. This position is ideal for someone who wants to grow with the company and become a key part of its long-term financial direction.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
• Manage billings, receivables, and monthly pay applications
• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and financial controls
• Maintain the general ledger and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Maintain the chart of accounts and an orderly accounting filing system
• Ensure accounts payable are paid timely and accounts receivable are collected promptly
• Oversee payroll processing and monthly bank reconciliations
• Ensure timely debt payments and proper documentation of financial transactions
• Oversee issuance of financial information and report results to leadership
• Support and improve accounting policies, procedures, and best practices
Financial Planning & Analysis
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning
• Analyze financial data and provide insights to leadership
• Calculate variances from budget and report significant findings
• Develop performance measures aligned with company goals
• Provide financial analyses for capital investments and operational decisions
• Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
• Support management cost reporting systems
Risk Management & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
• Maintain appropriate insurance coverage and support benefits administration
• Support governmental reporting, audits, and regulatory requirements
• Construct and monitor reliable internal control systems
• Maintain records that meet auditor and agency standards
• Monitor legal or regulatory matters relevant to the industry
Human Resources, Administration & Support Functions
• Support HR activities including benefits management and basic HR administration
• Manage company contract pre-qualifications and related documentation
• Support operational leadership with financial data for decision-making
• Implement operational best practices across administrative and financial functions
Relationship & Third-Party Management
• Maintain banking relationships
• Support communication with external auditors, advisors, and vendors
• Provide financial documents and metrics for insurance, bonding, or investment-related needs
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (required)
• CPA or similar certification a plus but not required
• 3–10 years of accounting experience; construction industry experience preferred but not required
• Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and general ledger management
• Experience with billing, receivables, and pay application processes (construction or contracting is a bonus)
• Analytical, detail-oriented, and highly organized
• Proficiency with accounting software, Excel, and financial tools
• Interest in taking on increasing responsibility and developing into a long-term company leader
