Under general supervision of the Fire Captain, responds to fire and medical emergencies and other requests for service, performs fire prevention, maintains fire station and equipment, performs office work, and all other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • Firefighter Trainee: $45,302.00 - $70,719
  • Firefighter: $51,858.07 - $74,253

Detailed Work Activities

Duties and Tasks

  • Maintains a readiness for, and responds to, reports of emergencies, which include fires, emergency medical calls, technical rescue incidents, hazardous materials, and other situations that may present hazards or harm to people or property.
  • Inspects, maintains and makes minor repairs to apparatus, equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs station maintenance duties including storing equipment, cleaning and maintaining the grounds.
  • Conducts pre-incident surveys.
  • Performs annual maintenance and testing of fire hydrants, hoses and other equipment and vehicles as required.
  • Participates in physical fitness, training sessions, and maintains required certifications.
  • Assists with the completion of incident reports.
  • Represents the department at special events including but not limited to parades, open houses, station tours, educational activities and community presentations.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Salary range depends on qualifications for each position. Different job titles have distinct hiring ranges aligned with their respective classification requirements.


Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • N.C. Class C Driver's License (with the ability to obtain a Class B Driver's License within six months of employment)
  • To qualify for the Firefighter pay grade and salary, you must have already completed all below training/certifications. To qualify as a firefighter trainee, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE TRAINING/CERTIFICATION CONSISTING OF THE FOLLOWING WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE (AT A MINIMUM):
    • NC Hazardous Materials Responder — Level I Certification
    • NC Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification
    • NC Firefighter Certification
    • NC EMT-Basic certification through NCOEMS
    • FEMA classes ICS 700, ICS 800, NIMS 100, and NIMS 200
    • NC Child Safety Seat Technician Certification

Physical Requirements

  • An employee must be physically able to be cleared for self-contained breathing apparatus/respirator use and to be able to perform the essential firefighter duties as defined in NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 1582, OSHA 1910.156, and OSHA 1920.134.
  • Work could have frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions, exposure to atmospheric conditions, hazardous materials, environmental conditions and extreme weather conditions.
  • Background check meeting the requirements of N.C. General Statutes for a firefighter.
  • Must be able to effectively operate on a 24-hour, rotating shift.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, officials and members of the public.
  • Effective customer service.
  • The ability to act calmly and rationally in emergency situations.
  • The skill and ability to perform minor maintenance on various equipment.
  • Good communication skills both written and oral.
