General Description
The Park Maintenance Technician II performs manual and semi-skilled maintenance tasks and operates light-to-medium sized motorized equipment to maintain Roanoke County parks, athletic fields, and facilities. All Parks Maintenance Technicians’ tasks may include routine mowing, landscaping, athletic field maintenance, minor facility and equipment repairs, event support, park patrol, cleaning, storm debris removal, and other related duties to support department initiatives. Additionally, all Parks Maintenance Technicians are classified as “Essential Personnel” and may be occasionally required to work extended shifts, nights, weekends, and/or during emergency weather events.
~ Performs routine park, facility, and athletic field maintenance (e.g., mowing, grooming, cleaning, minor repairs) for pavilions, playgrounds, hardscapes, and related amenities.
~ Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment used in park/grounds maintenance, including dump trucks, tractors (open/enclosed cab) with attachments, laser grader, and other equipment.
~ Operates small engine and grounds equipment such as multi-deck mowers, field groomers, and chippers.
~ Conducts routine pre-trip/operational inspections and operator maintenance using established checklists; reports unsafe conditions and needed repairs.
~ Services equipment and performs minor repairs/adjustments consistent with training, policies, and safety requirements.
~ Calibrates, applies, and documents fertilizers, herbicides, and other approved agricultural/turf materials in accordance with applicable requirements.
~ Loads, unloads, and secures materials, tools, and equipment for transport; assists with staging materials at job sites.
~ Follows County safety policies and procedures; uses proper PPE and safe work practices around equipment, chemicals, and the public.
~ Supports County snow removal operations for County-maintained sites and assists with countywide emergencies and weather events as Essential Personnel.
~ Provides operational support for departmental tourism and athletic events (setup, breakdown, site readiness, and related assistance).
Requirements/Preferences
Education:
Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
Required: Minimum of two years experience in the operation of motorized equipment in grounds maintenance or related field. Preferred: Experience in athletic field maintenance and/or park maintenance operations and equipment.
Certifications/Licenses
Required: Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Registered Technician Certificate from Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services or ability to obtain within six months of employment. First Aid/CPR and forklift certification or ability to obtain within first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of safety rules/regulations and safe operation/service of park maintenance equipment and vehicles. Ability to safely operate light-to-medium motorized maintenance equipment used for parks/grounds work. Working agricultural/turf knowledge (soil preparation, seeding, soil amendments, and application practices). Ability to calibrate/apply materials and maintain accurate application documentation. Ability to perform minor equipment adjustments and repairs consistent with training and policy. Ability to train/mentor others as assigned. Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and inclement weather. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position is not a formal supervisory role. May provide task assistance to peers (e.g., demonstrating safe equipment use or work methods) as requested by supervision.
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search and DMV driving record review with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Subject to twenty-four-hour on-call and work varied shifts as assigned.
