General Description
Performs responsible service work in the care and maintenance of stray and owner surrendered animals at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP). Provides medical treatment and supervision in the absence of the Staff Veterinarian. Performs difficult technical and paramedical work in the care and treatment of sheltered animals. Assesses the health of animals; administers medications and vaccinations; performs veterinary procedures under the direction of the staff veterinarian; humanely euthanizes and disposes of animals using proper methods and equipment; and maintains accurate records of medical treatment. Performs supervisor duties when needed. Performs other duties as required.
Essential Job Functions
~ Provides humane treatment of all animals at all times.
~ Cleans kennels and general areas of the RCACP.
~ Feeds and cares for animals with appropriate food and water that is required of the species when assigned.
~ Receives animals and places them in the appropriate caging unit.
~ Ensures that all animals are kept as clean, dry and comfortable as possible.
~ Follows veterinarian approved procedures and provides medical care and vaccinations as required.
~ Administers prescribed medications as directed by the Staff Veterinarian.
~ Sends monthly Rabies Reports to Roanoke City for licensing and tag information.
~ Collects fecal and blood samples for testing and transport to outside reference laboratories.
~ Constructs surgery lists for all animals that need to be spayed and neutered prior to adoption.
~ Regularly checks the animals for signs of illness or injury and makes the decision to transport to Angels of Assisi or EVS for medical care.
~ Maintains consistent protocols in the cleaning and disinfecting of the animal areas.
~ Participates in the euthanasia of animals as scheduled: Coordinates the euthanasia list in the absence of the Kennel Supervisor. Properly documents the euthanasia solution.
~ Reports any problems to the Staff Veterinarian or other appropriate supervisors in a timely manner.
~ Maintain professional relationship with all animal control personnel, animal welfare organizations, volunteers and coworkers.
~ Ensures that all animal areas, bedding and food provisions are clean, disinfected, sanitized and handled appropriately.
~ Ensures materials and supplies are stored properly.
~ Acts as Supervisor on Duty, when all other supervisors are not present at RCACP.
~ Provides oversight to volunteers.
~ Communicates medical advice and needs to fosters/adopters as need for all RCACP animals.

Education:
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience
Required: Some experience working with animals. Preferred: Two or more years of experience working with animals.
Certifications/Licenses
Required: Must be certified to perform euthanasia of animals.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Computer skills to include ability to key forms, navigate through software, receive and send email and search internet sources. Ability to follow instructions and relay information to other workers. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to document work with simple recordkeeping. Skill in the use of animal care tools, supplies and equipment.

Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must maintain a neat professional appearance consistent with company policy.
