The Assistant Production Manager supports overall production operations by leading multiple manufacturing departments and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This position combines daily leadership responsibilities with process engineering skills to improve efficiency, workflow, and quality across the plant. Departmental assignments may change based on business needs and the manager’s strengths.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduction Leadership
- Oversee day-to-day operations in assigned departments, ensuring production goals for quality, delivery, and efficiency are met.
- Plan and coordinate work schedules, staffing, and priorities.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and performance feedback to team leads and operators.
- Foster a positive, accountable, and safety-focused work environment.
- Collaborate with other production leaders to balance workload and support changing priorities.
Process Improvement & Engineering
- Evaluate production processes to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
- Lead workflow optimization initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and root-cause analysis tools.
- Develop and implement process improvements that reduce waste, improve throughput, and enhance consistency.
- Support documentation of best practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Assist in equipment layout planning and ergonomic improvements to enhance operator productivity.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with planning, materials, manufacturing engineering, and quality teams to ensure smooth production flow.
- Support training initiatives to develop cross-functional skills among production staff.
- Provide technical insight during new product introductions or process changes.
- Work closely with maintenance and engineering to address recurring production issues.
QualificationsRequired
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering—or equivalent experience in production management.
- 3 years of experience in manufacturing leadership, production supervision, or process improvement.
- Proven ability to analyze production data and drive measurable improvements.
- Working knowledge of Lean tools (5S, Kaizen, VSM) and root cause problem solving.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- Experience in a high-mix, low-to-medium volume manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems for scheduling and production tracking.
- Background in technical process documentation and workflow design.
