Position Summary

The Trauma Counselor provides direct support to victims of sexual assault and other violent crimes.  The role involves individual and group counseling, program development, and educating about the impacts of trauma and violence.  All YWCA York staff are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture, supporting the YWCA’s goals of eliminating racism and empowering women.


Starting Salary: $50,000/per year

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing individual counseling to child, adolescent, and adult victims and their significant others.
  • Participate in planning, developing, and implementing various support groups and activities for children, teens, and adults.
  • Respond to the agency hotline and perform intake interviews as necessary.
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with other community resources, and represent our agency at local alliance and coalition meetings and events as needed.
  •  Maintain statistics, reports, and documentation as needed for all direct services using the victim services database and other electronic systems as they are developed.
  • Evaluate incoming clients to estimate the expected duration of treatment. 
  • Follow accepted ethical standards as outlined in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), American Counseling Association (ACA), or American Psychological Association (APA) Code of Ethics, depending on your graduate training.
  • Offer training sessions tailored to the dynamics of victimization for volunteers, staff, and other community professionals.


 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in counseling, psychology, or social work required.
  • Minimum two years post-graduate experience working with trauma victims preferred. 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sexual assault and incest dynamics and appropriate interventions preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of victims of sexual violence and other violent crimes.
  • Knowledge of community social service resources is helpful.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • High level of discretion, confidentiality, and cultural competency
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines 

YWCA York Requirements

  • Must support the YWCA mission to eliminate racism and empower women
  • Clearances required: PA Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Fingerprinting (or waiver affidavit)
  • Completion of Mandated Reporter Training within 90 days of hire
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to program sites as needed

 Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • This position operates in a professional environment
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods
  • Occasionally, you may need to lift supplies up to 20 pounds
