Teacher Assistant - Early Childhood Learning Center
General Description
The teacher assistant is responsible for assisting the Teacher implementing the curriculum for the classroom that is aligned to the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards. The teacher assistant will also assist the teacher by using ongoing, formative assessments to inform the implementation of classroom practices that reflect each child’s developmental level, learning style, and interests in each Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards domains.
The teacher assistant will implement the mission of YWCA by supporting women’s rights, opposing racism, creating greater public awareness of social and political issues affecting women; equity, economic security, child care, issues affecting youth, women’s health and peace.
Essential Duties
- Demonstrate a commitment to quality care and learning for young children
- Supervision and interacting with children
- Assist with designing a positive learning environment that is well organized, accessible to all children and equipped with clearly defined learning areas
- Assist with intentionally planning and imbedding learning opportunities/activities aligned to the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS) domains and maintain a method of documented planning that demonstrates the curriculum is based on the RIELDS
- Promote children’s learning and positive interactions
- Implement the curriculum through play experience that provide multiple opportunities for all children to attain developmentally appropriate goals in each developmental domain
- Design learning opportunities that integrate multiple goals as needed when directed by the Teacher
- Work with the Teacher to conduct ongoing, formative assessments to inform the implementation of classroom practices that reflect each child’s development style, and interests in the RIELDS
- Collaborate with the Teacher to engage families and relevant specialist in regular two-way communication to discuss each child’s goals, progress, accomplishments and development
- Support the Communication with families in a variety of ways on at least a weekly basis
- Implement the Comprehensive Services Plan to identify and support family’s needs
- Attend required meetings, networking and other professional development opportunities
- Follows the open and closing checklists for the classroom
- Must attend a minimum of eight staff meetings per year
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Preferred:
Must meet teacher assistant qualifications as established in Rhode Island law (RIGL 1611.2) for teacher assistants employed by school districts.
Or
Be at least 18 years of age and have documentation of a high school diploma or general equivalency.
Experience Preferred:
A minimum of 6 months of successful supervised teaching in a licensed/approved education program for the appropriate age level (student teaching may fulfill). “Supervised teaching” is defined as a teaching experience in accordance with an individualized professional development plan that is overseen by someone qualified as an Early Childhood Education Coordinator as defined in 5.1 of these standards and that includes active regularly scheduled supervision and review and documentation of the individual’s work as it relates to that individualized professional development plan.
