Position Summary
The IHH Shelter Cook will plan and prepare nutritious meals for program participants. Essential Job Functions
- Adhere to the policies of the YWCA and support its Mission and Vision.
- Standing for an extended period; lifting up to 25lbs.
- Plan and prepare meals for residents according to a pre-planned menu.
- Shop for groceries following budget and purchasing processes.
- Maintain an organized inventory of food and supplies.
- Monitor food levels and notify supervisor of low or out-of-stock items.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen and storage spaces in accordance with health department regulations.
- Wash dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment after each meal service.
- Properly handle, store and dispose of food to prevent contamination and waste.
- Follow all safety procedures for operating kitchen equipment.
- May have to occasionally assist with special meals or events as requested (holidays, etc.)
- Interact with residents in a respectful, trauma informed and nonjudgmental manner.
- Work cooperatively with shelter staff and volunteers.
- Perform all other duties deemed necessary for the smooth operation of IHH, Family & Community Empowerment and the YWCA.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience as a cook, prep cook or in a food service setting preferred.
- Food handler’s permit preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid Alabama driver’s license, automobile insurance and suitable driving record.
- The work for this position takes place in a residential shelter setting.
