JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE (Registered Nurse)

 

JOB SUMMARY: The person in this position practices professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. This person facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management services; and actively collaborates with school staff, families, and healthcare providers to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. This position also provides supervision and exercises appropriate delegation of health services duties.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Direct Clinical Care & Emergency Response: Administer first aid, medication, basic wound management, and specialized medical treatments for ill, medically fragile, or injured students/staff in accordance with State laws and District policies. Respond to medical emergencies (e.g., severe falls, seizures, allergic reactions, severe bleeding) and provide basic life support, including AED operation.
  • Specialized Nursing Procedures: Perform skilled nursing procedures, including ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheotomy care, catheterization, and diabetes management.
  • Special Education & Care Planning: Serve as the health specialist on child education evaluation teams to develop health components for IEPs and 504 plans. Plan, implement, and monitor individual nursing care plans and Emergency Action Plans for students with health conditions or disabilities that interfere with learning.
  • Health Screenings & Disease Control: Develop, implement, and monitor state- and local-mandated health screenings (e.g., vision, dental, hearing) and manage necessary follow-up care or referrals. Promote and assist in communicable disease control through immunizations, surveillance, reporting, and early intervention.
  • Health Education & Prevention: Provide health education, resources, and counseling to students and staff regarding wellness, mental health concerns, substance abuse prevention, disease prevention, and school health topics.
  • Policy & Program Management: Assist in forming, updating, and implementing district health policies, goals, and disaster preparedness procedures. Coordinate school/community health activities and act as a liaison between home, school, and healthcare providers.
  • Staff Training & Delegation: Develop, implement, and monitor training for school staff on delegated health procedures, medication administration, diabetic care, bloodborne pathogens, CPR, and safety practices.
  • Documentation & Monitoring: Maintain, evaluate, and interpret complete, accurate cumulative student health records (medications, treatments, immunizations, screening results, injury reports) in compliance with legal standards. Monitor students across school settings (classrooms, transportation, field trips) according to health plans.

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Hold current licensure from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and hold a valid certificate as a School Nurse from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 3–5 years of experience as an RN working with children and adolescents preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (must obtain and maintain Instructor Certification).
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics from preschool through age 21, including students with special needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, determine initial treatment, and intervene using recognized methods (e.g., SAMPLE, SOAPIER).
  • Knowledge and implementation of the Five Rights of Delegation and the NCSBN Decision Tree for Delegation to direct and supervise licensed and unlicensed personnel (LPN, AUA, CNA, etc.).
  • Strict compliance with all applicable school district policies, Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act scope of practice, and confidentiality laws (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).
  • Clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Strong organizational, computer, communication, and basic mathematical skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Operate a computer to enter data, maintain records, and generate reports.
  • Manage independently all materials, paperwork, and medical equipment required for health tasks; ability to lift and transport medical equipment.
  • Regularly perform physical labor requiring the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials (lifting over 50 lbs. maximum or carrying objects weighing over 25 lbs.).
  • Assist with physically transferring students from wheelchairs, mats, positioning tables, toilets, lifts, or other equipment as needed.
  • Required to regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods, and adapt to flexible schedules or constant interruptions based on student needs.
  • Travel between multiple district sites in a safe and timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups, including parents, teachers, administrators, transportation staff, and outside medical/community agencies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 185 Day Contract, 7.67 hours per day.
  • Salary schedule based on certified teacher scale plus 7.5% YPS Pay Scale Information
  • Benefits include: Full contribution to Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System, Health and Vision Insurance for Employee, $10,000 Life Insurance Policy, and Leave Policy (10 sick days, 3 personal days, 3 annual days, 5 bereavement days).

STATUS: Exempt Certified
