What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Public Defender position at Yuba County Public Defender?
The Public Defender’s Office is committed to providing legal representation for people charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford to hire private counsel. The Public Defender’s Office provides quality legal services in a professional manner, providing constitutional balance to the legal system.
The Deputy Public Defender serves as a trial attorney in defending indigent clients; learns and performs a variety of professional legal work involving the defense preparation of felony criminal cases as assigned and provides assistance to department staff. Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Licensed to practice law in the State of California
- Interview clients in and out of custody; discuss cases with associated parties, such as investigators, police officers, probation officers and other attorneys; prepare clients and witnesses for court appearance and testimony.
- Review and evaluate assigned cases; determine appropriate strategies to use in each case.
- Order investigations
- Negotiate resolution of cases with deputy district attorneys.
- Represent defendants in court at various stages of cases, including arraignments, preliminary hearings, pre-trial conferences court trials and/or trials.
- Research, formulate, draft and file motions, briefs and/or other legal documents.
- Write, file and argue motions in court.
- Prepare cases for presentation at jury trials; coordinate with appropriate relevant parties.
- Conduct legal research on criminal law issues.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Review, evaluate and determine legal motions, pleas and other legal action on behalf of client;
- Represent allegedly mentally ill, drug addicted and other applicants for public defense before and during hearing for commitment;
- Read, analyze and comprehend numerous files, including those related to complex cases, under tight deadlines, and in crowded and noisy conditions;
