Certified Teacher

Education/Experience: Bachelors degree and teaching certification are required. Experience working with students in alternative education is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Normal sitting, standing and walking throughout the day. Must be able to drive a car or ride in a car to travel for training or conduct organization business. Vision and hearing as are sufficient to carry out tasks and engage in normal conversation are necessary. Perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations.

Necessary Requirements: Must communicate effectively with program participants, students, co-workers and members of the public in writing, in person, using computer applications and on the telephone. Must have reliable transportation. Must have a strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program, to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community. Must have strong critical thinking skills to identify problems and arrive at timely solutions. Must believe in the mission of YouthBuild McLean County and be supportive of the organization’s strategies to help improve the lives of people we serve.

General Description: Teachers are under the direct supervision of the Education Director. This position is responsible for providing adequate and complete supervision and learning experiences that are appropriate to the individual needs, interests, abilities, and competencies of YBMC students. Teachers prepare dynamic, creative curriculum that fosters a love of learning, meets education standards and provides the instruction of skills needed to be successful in life after YouthBuild. Teachers create rigorous, individualized educational experiences that will lead students towards the completion of their high school diploma or General Education diploma (GED) as applicable.

TASKS

  • Display professional competence in teaching the curricular areas of the high school program.
  • Develop and maintain long range and daily instructional curriculum plans
  • Maintain records for such things as student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records, and documents required by the Illinois State Board of Education and/or YouthBuild McLean County using prescribed formats
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies such as group work, lecture, mini-lessons, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques while using a variety of assessment strategies
  • Adapt curriculum and develop additional materials according to the needs of the program and students.
  • Develop individualized lesson plans for each student and assess student academic progress by reviewing and updating plans regularly.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the school improvement plan in order to improve student achievement and success;
  • Use appropriate techniques to encourage active participation in decision-making regarding such things as classroom rules, organization and topics of study which communicate a respectful and empowering attitude between staff and students
  • Develop and implement a system for student recognition
  • Promote and role model problem solving, cooperative negotiating skills and conflict resolution strategies
  • Apply appropriate consequences for inappropriate student behavior
  • Build meaningful, productive relationships with students
  • Structure lessons that encourage risk-taking in learning and model life-long learning
  • Create and maintain an attractive school environment which is conducive to learning, and follows a systematic path of interest to the learner
  • Attend staff meetings and other YouthBuild functions as required
  • Make all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Participate in special projects such as leadership development activities, community service projects, life skills training, mentoring and others as assigned
  • Assist in community outreach, recruitment and follow-up activities.
  • Provide career assessments, career counseling, labor market research, case management, job placement assistance and program follow-up services to eligible YouthBuild participants as needed.
  • Document and maintain participant files in compliance with program procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to Federal, State and Local requirements and Agency policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the staff team to address concerns, celebrate excellence and strategically plan by attending meetings, trainings and opportunities for skill development.
  • Participate in special programs outside of the scheduled workday to support the mission of YouthBuild McLean County like the Service Ball, Graduation, youth field trips, national training and other events as scheduled.
  • Make all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Apply appropriate consequences for inappropriate student behavior and rewards for student excellence
  • Build meaningful, productive relationships with students
  • Prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.

Accept other tasks as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40,000.00 per year
