Our award-winning summer camps in beautiful Vasona Lake County Park immerse children in the wonders of the natural world through outdoor adventures, hands-on activities, and exciting encounters with local wildlife and habitats.
Summer Camp Instructors: Hands-On Science & Nature Education
Youth Science Institute (YSI) is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Summer Camp Instructors to lead hands-on science and nature-based programs at Vasona Lake County Park. Instructors work with children in grades Pre-K through 6, guiding them through experiments, outdoor exploration, and inquiry-based learning experiences that foster curiosity, confidence, and a lasting connection to the natural world.
Position Overview
- Training: Flexible virtual training beginning in early May
- Program Dates: June 8 – August 7, 2025
- Minimum Commitment: 6 consecutive weeks
- Positions Available: Part-time and full-time
Core Responsibilities
- Lead groups of up to 18 campers in hands-on science activities, games, and outdoor lessons
- Implement daily lesson plans using YSI-provided curriculum and materials
- Guide campers on supervised nature walks and outdoor exploration activities
- Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of all participants in an outdoor setting
- Assist with programs that include YSI’s live animal ambassadors (training provided)
- Support daily setup, cleanup, and care of program materials and equipment
- Communicate professionally and positively with campers, families, and park visitors
Program Leadership
- Deliver engaging hands-on science activities across multiple disciplines (environmental, biological, physical, and social sciences) in our outdoor classroom setting
- Create a safe, inclusive, and exciting learning environment that sparks scientific curiosity
- Maintain exceptional program quality through careful preparation, organization of materials, and thorough post-camp cleanup
- Support camp operations by maintaining both indoor and outdoor teaching spaces
Safety, Supervision, and Professional Conduct
- Prioritize camper safety and well-being through active supervision and awareness
- Follow all YSI safety protocols and emergency procedures
- Maintain appropriate instructor-to-camper ratios during all activities
- Report any safety concerns promptly to camp management
- Maintain professional boundaries in all interactions with youth
- Provide warm, professional communication with families and visitors
- Support fellow instructors and camp management as needed
- Maintain flexibility to adapt to changing program needs
- Complete all required documentation and attend staff meetings/trainings
Physical Requirements
- Lead active outdoor programs throughout full camp day, including:
- Guiding nature hikes up to 1 mile on varied terrain (hills, trails, uneven surfaces)
- Moving program materials and supplies (up to 30 pounds)
- Maintaining high energy and enthusiasm in varying weather conditions
- Visual/auditory awareness of group activities and surroundings
- Demonstrate physical stamina for full-day outdoor activities
- Knowledge of heat/sun safety and maintaining proper hydration
What We’re Looking For
Experience & Education
- Experience working with children in formal or informal learning environments (such as coaching, tutoring, mentoring, teaching assistance, museum education, interpretive programs, scouting, or community programs)
- Interest in hands-on science, nature, and outdoor education; coursework or background in science, education, environmental studies, or a related field is a plus
- Prior experience in summer camps or youth programs is a plus
- First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment

- Strong organizational skills to manage daily activities, materials, and schedules
- Collaborative, reliable team member who takes initiative while supporting shared responsibilities
- Basic comfort using digital tools for documentation and parent communication
Required for Employment
- At least 18 years of age
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
- Successful completion of required background checks, including fingerprinting, through the California Department of Justice and the FBI
- Verification of a negative TB test result dated within the past four (4) years
