What are the responsibilities and job description for the Human Resources Manager position at Your After School?
People & Talent Manager
Your After School (YAS) | Madison, CT | Full-time, hybrid
Help build the team behind every great afternoon
At Your After School, kids at 20 schools across Connecticut and New York get to code, build, cook, dance, and explore once the bell rings. None of that happens without the right people in the room, and that's where you come in.
We're hiring our first People & Talent Manager, a leadership role reporting directly to the CEO. You'll be our lead HR professional across three groups: our back-office team, our on-site Site Directors, and the independent contractor instructors who bring our programs to life.
This is a builder's role. We've grown fast, and many of our HR, onboarding, and compliance processes are ready for someone to shape them. You'll design the systems, document them, and train the team on them. You'll start hands-on, and as your team grows into the day-to-day you'll move toward strategy, employee relations, and leadership. If you'd rather create the playbook than inherit one, you'll love this.
What you'll own
Your team. You'll lead and coach a Scheduling Coordinator, Substitute Coordinator, and HR Coordinator, including teammates working remotely across time zones. You'll also build the policies, handbooks, and training our whole team relies on, and shape a culture where employees and contractors want to come back season after season.
Recruiting. You'll run full-cycle hiring for back-office staff, Site Directors, and contractor instructors. That means getting creative with sourcing, building a strong substitute bench in every region, and leading the high-volume push before each fall, winter, and spring session without cutting corners.
Onboarding and clearance. You'll guide new employees, contractors, and vendors from offer to first day. Your work will keep instructor clearance (NY TEACH, CT CCHRS) and vendor insurance current, so we always know who's cleared for which school.
Staffing and district relations. You'll make sure no class goes unstaffed, oversee scheduling and substitute coverage, and serve as a go-to contact for districts on staffing changes. When instructor concerns or performance issues come up, you'll handle them with care.
The HR engine. You'll partner with our accountant on payroll and timesheets, administer PTO, leave, and year-end tax forms, and keep us compliant with CT and NY employment law, including OSHA standards for our warehouse. You'll own employee relations end to end, run performance reviews, and bring smart HR tech and AI into how we work.
What you bring
- 8 years in HR, recruiting, or people operations, including managing direct reports
- A track record of building HR processes from scratch
- Strong knowledge of CT employment law (NY a plus) and working knowledge of payroll (QuickBooks a plus)
- Calm, organized follow-through and a knack for earning trust quickly
- Bonus: experience in education or youth programs; SHRM-CP or PHR
Why YAS
You'll have a seat at the leadership table and real influence on how a growing company scales, and your work will shape what kids experience after school every day.
