IT PMO Lead – Governance, Risk & Delivery Assurance
Location: Troy, MI (Onsite – hands-on role)
Engagement Type: 6-month Contract-to-Hire
Role Overview
We are seeking a PMO Lead who began their career as a hands-on Project Manager and later evolved into enterprise PMO governance, delivery oversight, and PM coaching leadership.
This role is accountable for running a mature PMO—enforcing governance, owning financial controls, and improving delivery outcomes—while remaining pragmatic and flexible in complex, real-world environments.
Key Responsibilities
PMO Governance & Delivery Oversight
- Lead and enforce PMO governance across portfolios and programs
- Provide delivery oversight without micromanaging execution teams
- Balance governance rigor with operational flexibility
- Support hybrid delivery models (Agile, Waterfall, blended)
- Act as escalation point for delivery risks, dependencies, and execution issues
Financial Ownership (Non-Negotiable)
- Run monthly PMO / portfolio financial reviews
- Own discussions related to:
- Forecast vs. actuals
- Budget variances
- Accruals and invoicing gaps
- Hold Project and Program Managers accountable for financial accuracy
- Partner with leadership on investment decisions and prioritization
PM Coaching & Leadership
- Coach and mentor Project and Program Managers
- Elevate PM execution maturity across the organization
- Apply situational leadership and judgment vs. rigid enforcement
- Lead through organizational and structural change
Process Stewardship
- Operate within an existing PMO (not a build-from-scratch role)
- Use recognized industry models to guide governance and maturity
- Ensure processes support delivery outcomes—not documentation for its own sake
- Clearly differentiate between:
- Process models
- Methodologies
- Execution practices
Required Experience (Screening Criteria)
- 12 years of IT delivery experience
- Clear progression from Project Manager → PMO leadership
- Enterprise PMO governance experience
- Strong foundation in process models such as:
- PMBOK / PMI
- CMMI
- Comparable governance or maturity models
- Proven experience with:
- Portfolio governance
- Financial variance management
- PM coaching and mentoring
- Exposure to complex enterprise initiatives, including:
- ERP systems (SAP / QAD preferred)
- Infrastructure and network programs
- Plant stand-ups or footprint changes
- Hybrid delivery environments
