What are the responsibilities and job description for the AQUATICS LESSON INSTRUCTOR position at YOUNG MENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF MANKATO?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Aquatic Director, Swim Instructors will provide swim lessons following the American Red Cross guidelines. Swim Instructors will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with American Red Cross guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Know and review emergency procedures.
- Follow all YMCA policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
- Minimum age of 16.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous/dangerous situations.
- Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4 swimming skill)
- Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.
- Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA
- Never been convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs). Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time. The ability to calmly and effectively react in an emergency situation.
