AQUATICS LESSON INSTRUCTOR

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under supervision of the Aquatic Director, Swim Instructors will provide swim lessons following the American Red Cross guidelines. Swim Instructors will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with American Red Cross guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
9. Know and review emergency procedures.
10. Follow all YMCA policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification
2. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
3. Minimum age of 16.
4. Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance.
5. Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous/dangerous situations.
6. Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4 swimming skill)
7. Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers.
8. Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA
9. Never been convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).  Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.  The ability to calmly and effectively react in an emergency situation.
