Reporting to the Dean of Culture, the behavior interventionist supports the school site in his/her support of the school’s cultural programming, restorative practices, discipline systems and protocol, and school safety systems/structures. While the exact responsibilities of this position may vary based on placement and needs of the school, the behavior interventionist helps to achieve the priorities of the school through any culture-facing system. The behavior interventionist works with the dean of culture to support teacher development with management, implement systems that promote a safe and BRIGHT school environment, ensure a fully functioning discipline system, establish positive behavior structures, and manage ongoing duty, arrival, and dismissal expectations. The Behavior Interventionist will adhere to YACS best practices in order to successfully implement the social emotional curriculum and programming in order to meet all other academic goals defined by the network and the Principal. The behavior interventionist reports directly to the Dean of Culture in order to help establish culture programming that supports arts-integrated learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth that are aligned with the school’s mission and vision.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Discipline and Culture
- Support with consistent and fair administration and tracking of student conduct and discipline reporting, referrals or documentation for student misbehaviors
- Facilitating a change of scenery for students not meeting the expectations in the classroom environment, which includes reflection sheets, restorative circles, student statements, etc.
- Structure in-school suspension in a safe, productive way
- Contribute toward a safe environment for learning, including ensuring that student conduct is maintained and discipline is enforced fairly and consistently, and updating and implementing the required annual school safety report;
- Support the Dean of Culture with serving as liaison to parents and facilitate parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school’s policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, homework, and events;
- Communicating incidents and policies with parents in conjunction with the Dean of Culture
- Gives suggestions to the Dean of Culture so that an administrator can coach teachers on classroom/ behavior management techniques;
- Assist in making formal reports to the board of trustees and charter entity on student conduct, school safety and related matters;
- Implement and follow policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement;
Safety Structures and Systems
- Implement and follow policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement;
- Supporting with Creating and Implementing arrival, dismissal, and duty procedures for all staff and students
Positive Behavior Intervention System (MTSS)
- Support with Organizing parent conferences as needed
- Support with Establishing protocol for parent communication, behavior tracking, and discipline management
- Support with Facilitating parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school’s policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, homework, and events;
- Support with Creating systems for promotion of social emotional learning and YACS restorative practices
Communication
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents, the school leader, and other colleagues.
- Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Conference with parents to consistently update them on their child’s progress.
Professional Conduct and Other
- Exhibit professional judgment and responsibility at all times.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Participate in assigned morning, lunch, and afternoon duties.
- Follow attendance policy as assigned by the supervisor (Dean of Culture and Principals).
- Perform other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or supervisor.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Undertake administrative and instructional duties as the principal may assign.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor degree
- Experience and demonstrated ability in working with children in a teaching, counseling or other applicable capacity (examples include, but are not limited to involvement with community youth organizations, supervisory roles in the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, and mentorships);
- Demonstrated successful teaching/ intervention/ assistant teaching experience (preferred, but not required)
- Exhibited leadership in working with professional staff, students, and the community;
- Agreement with the academic goals and philosophy of the charter school;
- Commitment to accountability;
- Demonstrated success in encouraging parental involvement.
