Part-Time Counselor, Special Programs - Special Programs/Student Services - Columbia College 2025-2026

Salary: The Hourly Range: $54.27 to $86.76

Doctorate Range: $63.95 to $89.04

(2025-2026 Certified Part-time Non-Instructional Hourly Salary Schedule)

 

Part Time Faculty office Hours are paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.

Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Services, the Part Time Special Programs Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to diverse student populations. Counseling services include all aspects of academic, career, and personal counseling. Primary assignment will be working with EOPS/CARE, and Foster Youth. Counseling may also include Justice Involved, Veterans, CalWORKs, and other disproportionately impacted student populations. Duties may include individual student appointments, walk-in assignments, group guidance courses, workshops, evening and weekend assignments, and other outreach activities; facilitates the successful completion of their goals and objectives in college through academic and support counseling, financial aid, and other support services. Must be able to use available technologies and apply current career theories and methods. In addition, counselors are to maintain effective relations with all areas of the college community, and promote – wherever appropriate – the counseling services of all Special Programs and Student Services departments. 

 

The successful candidate will join a Student Services Division that continues to create specialized supportive services and curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing student completion through the implementation of strategies geared to increase student equity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development (Note: A license as a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to 

Title 5 Section 53410.1) OR possess a California 

Community College Counselor credential appropriate to the subject OR the equivalent.

 

1. Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages or 

2. Six semester units or equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages 

3. In addition, have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.

Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Sensitivity to the needs, problems and challenges associated with the diversity of the community college student population.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS

Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.

Dexterity: fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle individual papers, write and take notes.

Lifting: occasional lifting of papers, files, equipment and material weighing up to 25 pounds.

Visual Requirements: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work; ability to adjust focus frequently.

Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.

Emotional/Psychological Factors: ability to make decisions and concentrate; frequent contact with others including some public contact; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Understanding of the comprehensive nature of academic counseling at a community college. 

• Experience in counseling students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities and/or Foster Youth.

• Experience in interpreting local, state and federal regulations and preparing annual evaluations. 

• Experience with reporting to an outside governing agency. 

• A commitment to supportive relations with students, which includes sensitivity to the needs and problems of a diverse multicultural student population.

• Highly developed counseling skills that enable one to comfortably deal with a variety of personal issues without reflecting personal bias. 

• Ability to conduct and develop appropriate workshops, guidance courses, and seminars.

• Willingness to use available technologies and assessment instruments with the ability to provide effective interpretation to students. 

• Awareness and commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the California Community College.

 

Example of Duties

GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Part of the counseling assignment may be online, in the evening, and/or on Saturdays. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of principles and practices of higher education organization and structure; institutional policies that govern admissions and registration; data management computer software. 

• Duties include academic, career, and personal counseling or related services to students with histories of trauma or various disabilities (i.e.PTS,TBD, psychological, mobility, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, etc.).

• Develop, implement, and maintain innovative program support services, and in compliance with Title 5, for EOPS/CARE/NextUP and other special populations, in areas such as outreach, recruitment, orientation, assessment, counseling, advisement, and financial aid.

• Provide assistance to the faculty coordinators and college administrators to analyze and evaluate data for specific use; interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures; ability to prioritize workload and conflicting demands.

• Conduct individual student counseling appointments, including drop-in meetings and group workshops. Assignment will include some weekend and evening duties.

• Teach orientation sessions to new students to acquaint them with Columbia College programs, services, procedures and policies.

• Help students understand the increasingly complex process of applying to the college and registering for classes.

• Assist students with determining career goals, including administering and interpreting assessments, and linking those goals to a corresponding educational objective. 

• Advise students making course selections and helping them create Educational Plans. 

• Discuss university transfer options and help students make positive and realistic transfer decisions.

• Refer students to appropriate student support and educational services on campus. 

• Perform outreach to local high schools (college nights, career days, etc.). 

• Monitor, support, and encourage struggling students during the academic and/or progress probation process.

• Serve as a liaison with CSU and UC systems, and private and out-of-state institutions, to gather and disseminate everchanging information to students. 

• Teach a wide variety of Guidance classes.

• Help students cope with the stresses and strains of college, and life in general.

• Refer students to ongoing mental health (therapeutic) counseling as needed. 

• Work flexible schedule to include evenings hours and weekends and possible off campus sites.

• Participation in department and college-wide committees is expected.

• Perform other duties as assigned.
