General Definition of Work:
The General Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within school buildings and surrounding grounds. This position performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and custodial tasks to ensure that facilities are sanitary, functional, and presentable for students, staff, and visitors. Custodians will perform duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing and may assist with room setups, and reports maintenance needs or safety concerns to supervisory staff. Custodians are expected to follow established procedures, exercise good judgment, and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while representing the school.

Place of Work
The normal place of work is on the premises used by Rock Hill Schools. Rock Hill Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions
- Always keep the building neat and clean.
- Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
- Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when conditions require it.
- Scrubs, hoses down, disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Clean all chalkboards or wipe off boards as needed.
- Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the school administration.
- Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
- Keeps the grounds free from trash.
- Report major repairs needed promptly to the ead custodian.
- Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian about any emergency or danger to school property.
- Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the lead custodian or principal.

- Ability to perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and administrators.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, respond to emergencies, and work independently or as part of a team.
Education and Experience
- High school graduate or GED preferred. Must be 18 years old.
Special Requirements
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
- Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided.
Physical Requirements/ Work Conditions
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequently climb ladders and use hand strength to operate tools and equipment.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 90 lbs (e.g., furniture, equipment, supplies).
- Push and pull heavy items such as tables, bleachers, and floor machines.
- Specific vision abilities include close, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor duties.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, and equipment noise.
- May work in confined spaces, on ladders, or in varying temperatures.
- Occasional evenings, weekends, or overtime required for events or emergencies.
- Must follow all district safety procedures and OSHA standards.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals which may include petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.

Pre-Onboarding Requirements
As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
