Performs semi-skilled work in a variety of trades to include carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; work is done in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County buildings, facilities and utilities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing roofing and structural inspections and repairs.
Incumbent must be available to respond to calls for service after normal working hours or on a rotational basis. This position is considered an essential position which requires the individual to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions or as conditions warrant.
Assists with skilled carpentry work as required, to include framing, trim work, and other building maintenance tasks including but not limited to, installing partitions, doors, roofing and painting.
Performs semi-skilled work in the areas of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work to building systems to include lighting, wiring, troubleshooting, and general maintenance; works either independently on more routine work or assists journey or master level trades workers with various projects.
Makes repairs to plumbing such as faucets, and unstopping drains.
Plans and lays out work from blueprints, drawings, or verbal instructions.
Plans or assists in planning for major projects; estimates time and materials needed.
Removes old conduits and installs new conduit either independently or as part of a team doing renovation work; assists with installations of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and various facility systems such as generators, power panels, wiring, air handles, and compressors.
Make sure that all related documentation such as work orders, receipts and receiving reports are completed and submitted.
Reviews computerized work order system for assignments and documents labor and materials.
Performs routine preventive maintenance tasks such as changing filters and belts, and lubricating bearings and motors.
Operates motor vehicles and equipment and performs general maintenance, repair, and construction tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by vocational course work, and 2-4 years’ experience doing increasingly skilled trades work in one or more areas.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history, background and DMV record checks.

General knowledge of the common terminology, tools, and practices of carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades.
General knowledge of OSHA standards and occupational hazards and safety precautions and procedures common to the skilled trades.
General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
General knowledge of computer graphic software and other related computer aided design software preferred.
Basic use and knowledge of networked computers and common applications such as e-mail, Microsoft Office and asset management software.
Semi-skilled in performing electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and other drawings.
Ability to plan projects and to estimate time and materials required.
Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics' tools, carpenters' tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to lift and move equipment weighing between 50-100 pounds. Routinely climb stairs and ladders. Crawling must be done when working in attic spaces. There is a great deal of bending, stooping, standing, and walking.
