Customer Service Representative
York County SPCA
Schedule: Friday–Sunday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (24 hours/week)
About the Role
The Customer Service Representative (CSR) is often the first point of contact for visitors at the York County SPCA. This role helps create a welcoming experience for the community while supporting pet owners, adopters, and shelter programs.
The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, and comfortable working with both people and animals in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet visitors and provide helpful guidance about YCSPCA services
- Answer phone calls and respond to general emails
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and shelter programs
- Share information about programs such as the pet food pantry, foster program, Safe Pet Program, CARMA, and trap rentals
- Help schedule appointments and manage lobby traffic
- Provide resources and alternatives to pet surrender when possible
- Process retail purchases and donations
- Maintain a clean, organized lobby and restock materials
- Distribute supplies to foster caregivers and pet food pantry clients
- Assist with events, tours, and community outreach
- Collaborate with staff, animal control officers, and humane officers when needed
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- 2 years of customer service experience
- 1–2 years of personal animal handling experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in emotional situations
Preferred
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Animal shelter or animal-related work experience
- Experience handling complex or sensitive client conversations
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 40 lbs
- Maintain leash control of dogs up to 125 lbs
- Stand, bend, and move for extended periods
- Handle cats, dogs, and small animals safely
- Work indoors and outdoors
Working Environment
- 24 hours per week including weekends
- Minimum of three animal care holiday shifts per year
- Exposure to animal noise, odors, cleaning chemicals, and potential zoonotic diseases
