Job Summary
The Project Engineer – Mechanical Commissioning is responsible for the commissioning of mechanical systems, primarily in mission-critical environments such as data centers. This role requires a self-motivated and energetic professional with a solid understanding of building mechanical systems design, construction, and operation. The ideal candidate possesses both theoretical and practical knowledge in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems and related controls. Responsibilities include reviewing project information, executing daily field activities, maintaining project documentation, assisting senior engineers, and mentoring associate engineers. Strong technical competency, organizational skills, and teamwork are essential.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Commission mechanical, plumbing, fire alarm, and suppression equipment and related controls, primarily in data center environments.
- Review system designs for compliance with client facility goals.
- Assist in preparing plans and procedures for commissioning execution.
- Conduct commissioning activities from design through occupation phases, following client requirements and industry best practices.
- Attend factory testing of equipment and document procedures and results.
- Perform functional testing of equipment using appropriate test instrumentation.
- Document all field procedures, results, issues, and observations using company templates or online applications.
- Report on system performance and provide technical recommendations.
- Coordinate and execute field activities with project teams.
- Review and contribute to commissioning project documentation and schedules.
- Submit and maintain daily commissioning reports.
- Mentor and assist Associate Project Engineers.
- Respond to project team and client inquiries professionally and promptly.
- Ensure compliance with company, client, and project safety requirements.
- Demonstrate knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, and fire/life safety building systems and equipment, including but not limited to:
- Air/Water Cooled Chillers, Cooling Towers, Air Handling Units, CRAC Units, Boilers, Fuel Systems, Backup Generators, Gas/Steam Turbines, SCR Systems, Fan Coil Units, DX Split Systems, Fan Arrays, Chemical Injection Systems,
- VFDs, VRV Systems, Rooftop Units, VAV Units, Makeup Air Units, Hydronic Pumps, Leak Detection, Heat Trace, DDC & PLC Controls, Fire Pumps & Controllers, Pre-Action Fire Suppression Systems, Fire Alarm Control Panels, VESDA Systems, Domestic Water Pumps & Heaters.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering with 1 year of mission-critical project experience, or relevant industry mechanical/controls experience.
- OR minimum 4 years of commissioning experience with mission-critical project experience or relevant industry mechanical/controls experience.
Skills & Competencies:
- Experience in mission-critical facility commissioning is essential.
- Organized, detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive problem solver.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work with limited supervision.
- Knowledge and experience with ASHRAE or BCxA commissioning guidelines preferred.
- Control and programming experience a plus.
- Reasonable understanding of BMS and/or EPMS.
- Deep understanding and application of test instrumentation.
- Team player with a client-first mentality.
