Afterschool Lead Counselor -- Paine Elementary

Primary Summary:

The YMCA's focus is to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Provides direct supervision of a group of children within the Afterschool Program. Delivers a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.  Assists the Site Director in management duties, administrative tasks, and other responsibilities as needed.

Essential Functions:

1. Engages and supervises a group of children. Program hours are Monday - Friday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. (

2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.

3. Assists Site Director with activity schedules, daily procedures, and management of the Afterschool Site.

4. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.

5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.

6. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

7. Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.

8. Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will: 

• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens

• Attend required abuse risk management training annually

• Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.

• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. 

• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. 

Minimum Requirements:

1. Minimum age of 19 years old.

2. Previous experience working at a YMCA Childcare Program is preferred.

3. Successful completion of background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening.

4. Acquire and maintain the following certifications before the start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):

   1. First Aid/ CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)

5. Requisite Online Training Modules (completed before the start date and repeated annually).

Physical Demands:

1. Ability to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

2. Ability to be physically active includes but is not limited to walking, sitting, squatting, standing, kneeling, climbing, running, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.

3. Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the job's essential functions.
