Job Description

Availability: January-June 15 hours per week; September-December 10 hours per week; seasonal exempt 6 weeks July-August. The Assistant Camp Director is required to live on site during camp training and sessions-all meals, snacks, and lodging are provided during those times. Seasonal exempt wage of $250/day.

Position Summary

YMCA Overnight Camps provide youth the opportunity to learn new skills, gain an appreciation for the outdoors, while experiencing achievement, relationships, and belonging. The Assistant Director plays an integral role in creating a magical summer camp experience at Overnight Camp. Under the guidance of the Director, the Assistant Camp Director is responsible for managing and supporting camper cabins, counselors, and other leadership staff at camp. They will be involved in most facets of the summer sessions and will serve an important role in planning and running activities, scheduling, operation, and other areas as needed.

During the non-summer months, the Assistant Director will help support the planning, organization, and preparations for Overnight Camp.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Lead the recruitment and engagement of overnight camp staff
  • Plan high-quality activity curriculum that is ready for summer staff to implement
  • Assist in creating a culture in which every child has an exceptional camp experience
  • Assist in the monitoring of the morale of the staff members (sufficient rest, mental health, etc.) and provide guidance to help them self-regulate
  • Staying aware of parental concerns which have been communicated to the camp regarding each camper (eg, eating habits, dietary restrictions, special activity requests, medical issues, social concerns)
  • Ensure and lead high-quality family communication during the camp sessions, including but not limited to: camper’s illness/injuries, behavior supports, communication around incidents, supporting staff in sharing end-of-week highlights
  • Support unit leads and camper wellness teams in managing the daily schedule and ensuring high-quality programming
  • Co-lead the planning and delivery of staff training through specific training sessions and as general support
  • Be proactive, accessible, and available throughout the camp day to support where needed
  • Take photographs of camp activities
  • Enforce the principles and policies, as well as the objectives and philosophy of Overnight Camp
  • Be a positive role model to children and staff in your attitude and actions
  • Interact and engage with children in an age and developmentally appropriate manner, and use positive behavior guidance techniques
  • Adhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies
  • Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff
  • Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their children to have a successful camp experience
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 21
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • Prior experience working in an overnight camp setting
  • Demonstrated leadership and a commitment to developing, inspiring, and motivating a staff team
