What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard - Fayetteville YMCA (46476) position at YMCA of the Sandhills?
Lifeguards are responsible for preventing drowning and other injuries from occurring and must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This role will solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills, and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must be able to enforce pool policies and to effectively communicate with and educate members and guests of YMCA Aquatic policies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Surveillance & Prevention: Actively scans the water and deck area, enforcing rules, policies, and procedures to prevent injuries and/or drowning. Provides swim tests in accordance with YMCA standards to patrons and determines safe skill level.
- Emergency Response: Knows/reviews all emergency procedures according to the facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP). Recognizes and responds to emergency situations immediately by activating the EAP in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required
- First Aid & CPR: Provides care to injured patrons, including CPR/AED and First Aid in accordance with training and certification
- Communication: Clearly communicates pool rules to guests and educates patrons regarding safe behaviors in and around a water environment. Utilizes communication systems and updates supervisors in a timely manner. Possesses the ability to work independently and/or with a team
- Facility Maintenance: Conducts safety and chemical checks, maintains water quality records, responsibility for cleanliness and organization of the pool, deck, and pool room. Corrects and/or reports safety hazards in accordance with training
- Community & Public Relations: Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
- Training & Safety: Attends and participates in all required training to maintain rescue skills and physical fitness.
- Assists the YMCA operations team with other tasks or duties as assigned to ensure successful YMCA operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 16
- Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguarding (deep water) with CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with American Red Cross & YMCA
standards
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Strong swimming proficiency in freestyle and/or breaststroke, capability to maintain stamina, and assist and/or lift persons in distress of varying weights and sizes
- Ability to react to emergency situations with quick movements and strenuous physical activity
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere within the zone of responsibility
- Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility, including monitoring multiple swimmers simultaneously
- Ability to work in an indoor aquatic environment, including exposure to humidity and varying indoor temperatures, while maintaining focus and job performance
