Overview
This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Lifeguard supports the YMCA mission by maintaining a safe aquatic environment through active surveillance, emergency response, rule enforcement, and positive member engagement. This part-time role helps ensure high standards of safety, cleanliness, and member experience within the aquatics facility.
Swim Instructor is roughly 8-15 hours, must be available nights and weekends
Responsibilities
Aquatic Safety & Risk Management
- Maintain constant active surveillance of assigned zones
- Recognize and respond quickly to emergencies
- Perform water rescues, CPR/AED, and First Aid as needed
- Enforce pool rules and identify potential hazards
- Complete incident and accident reports
- Remain calm and focused while managing multiple responsibilities and interruptions.
- Meet the physical demands required to perform lifeguard rescue and response skills.
Facility Operations & Support
- Assist with maintaining a clean and organized pool deck
- Conduct safety and equipment checks
- Regularly monitor and record pool temperature, chlorine and pH levels based on city and state health standards
- Complete assigned deck duties and facility tasks
- Participate in mandatory lifeguard in-service trainings
Member Engagement & Professionalism
- Provide excellent customer service
- Work independently and collaboratively with participants of all ages and backgrounds.
- Build positive relationships with members and staff
- Promote YMCA programs when appropriate
- Demonstrate YMCA core values in all interactions
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
- Previous experience is a plus but not required.
- Must be 16 years of age or older and have current certifications listed below:
Certifications
- Current Lifeguard with Deep Water Certification
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
- Strong attention to detail required as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications required within 30 days of hire.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Ability to work with many interruptions, handling multiple tasks in a calm and responsible way, always affirming the member (e.g., scan and smile, nod, wave while answering the phone, if alone).
- Instructor certifications as required by classes being offered.
- Ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, and the desire to work with all ages, especially children
- Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision
- Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
- Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals
