In conjunction with the President & CEO, the Director of Development is responsible for managing the success of financial development of the YMCA of Southern Maine in order to advance the YMCA’s mission.
This position will be a leader in ensuring a culture of philanthropy at the Y. The Director of Development will manage annual giving campaigns, government, foundation, and corporate grants, special events, and capital campaigns. This position will run fundraising trainings and be a resource for staff and volunteers. The position will represent and promote the Y and its mission in the local community, developing positive relationships with community partners, donors, and business. This position will supervise the Development Associate.
Safety Consistently monitors working areas of responsibility for any violations of the code of conduct or inappropriate behaviors that do not compliment the professional and welcoming environment the YMCA of Southern Maine strives to maintain. Provides rapid and timely response to all accidents, situations, incidents and emergencies appropriately, calmly and professionally using proper techniques and completes incident reports as needed.
Cleanliness Maintains a professional and clean environment at the desk or work area, with equipment and in the surrounding work areas.
Meetings Attends required meetings including, but not limited to monthly staff meetings and required in services and training hours as determined by supervisor.
Punctuality/Coverage Meets the association standard for attendance, punctuality and dependability; keeping in confidence matters related to office or personnel; and, exercises good judgment around areas of responsibility. Responsible for finding coverage if unable to work a shift and notifying a supervisor via phone call.
Brand Wear proper YMCA attire or identification while on shift. Adheres to all Y Brand guidelines and receives prior approval for use and creation of any marketing and promotion materials from the Advancement department.

Essential Functions
- Manage the association annual campaign, fundraising events, grant funding, capital development, and endowment programs. Provides support for organization and documentation of annual campaign, special events, grant applications, and other financial development efforts.
- Serve as the Race Director for the Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids and lead the Adaptive Services Auction.
- Create impactful cause driven fundraising materials with support from the District Executive - Marketing and Northern York County, Design and Brand Specialist, and Marketing Coordinator.
- Train association staff and volunteers in fundraising techniques and serves as a resource.
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 40 major gift donors and prospects with an emphasis on individual major gift donors and prospects.
- Ensure accurate, consistent and timely tracking of data, reports and outcome measurements as required.
- Represent and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
- Prepare and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.
- Manage all tracking processes of contributed revenue ensuring accurate and relevant data is maintained for YMCA of the USA and other applicable reporting.
- Foster a climate of inclusion and innovation to develop member-focused programs which support the Y mission, goals, and strategies.
- Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA and decisions of the Senior Leadership Team.
- Represent the association as required by the CEO.
- Assist with YMCA special events including the annual celebration.
- Adhere to all Y Brand guidelines and receives prior approval for use and creation of any Y related social media from the Marketing department.
- Learn and actively utilize UKG Employee Portal on a consistent basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
- Previous supervisory or leadership role preferred.
- Three to five years of professional experience with a background in fundraising required.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and ability to travel locally.
- Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
- Experience using wealth screening software such as iWave preferred.
- Experience with event planning preferred.
- Ability to create impactful materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
- Detailed-oriented, with superior communication skills and the ability to clearly express ideas both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills, ability to meet deadlines, and the ability to be flexible and prioritize tasks.
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite or Mac equivalent.
- Ability to learn new software systems quickly. Experience with fund-raising software a plus.
- Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
- CFRE or equivalent a bonus.
- A criminal background check is required and may include fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire. This will be paid for by the YMCA of Southern Maine.
Physical
- Strength Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard. Perform all skills required for Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications. Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
- Manual Dexterity Ability to lift a person off the bottom and out of the water.
- Mobility While performing duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hand to handle, or feel; reach with arms and hands. Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch. Comfortable in the water.

- Job Specific Attributes Must be able to demonstrate competency in all skills and activities required to obtain, maintain and renew lifeguard, CPR, AED and first aid certifications through the American Red Cross or Y of the USA.
