What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Lifeguard position at YMCA of Northwest North Carolina?
Head Lifeguards are leaders, problem solvers, communicators, and customer service representatives. Being able to make quick decisions and enforce them tactfully is a key part of being a successful Head Lifeguard.
While ensuring safety is the primary duty, Head Lifeguards are also responsible for being an example and resource to other aquatic staff, building relationships with members and program participants, explaining rules as needed in a friendly and educational manner, and working with the Y team to be consistent across all shifts.
Essential Functions
- Serves as an example and resource to part-time aquatic staff.
- Conducts monthly lifeguard vigilance tests
- Helps identify and resolve aquatic maintenance needs, including Certified Pool Operator (CPO) tasks.
- Complete daily CPO tasks
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Minimum age 18 for full-time employment
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
- Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent. Employees need to cross-over to YUSA Guard within 90 days of employment.
- CPO certification preferred
- Ability to consistently work a non-traditional schedule including some nights and weekends.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
Physical Demands
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Meet lifeguard strength and lifting requirements as specified by the YMCA.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
