The YMCA Swim Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, and performance enhancement of swimmers across all ages and skill levels within a competitive or developmental swim program. The YMCA Swim Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, and performance enhancement of swimmers across all ages and skill levels within a competitive or developmental swim program. This role emphasizes the instruction of proper swimming techniques, the cultivation of a supportive and motivating team culture, and the implementation of a safe, structured, and goal-oriented training environment in alignment with YMCA standards and best practices.
Essential Functions
- Instructs participants on the swim team in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with participants and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers participants and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Minimum age of 18 and working knowledge and experience with a competitive swim environment.
- Certifications: Red Cross Safety Training for coaches or YMCA Lifeguard, HSI Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen. (pre-requisites)
- YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving required prior to the first swim meet.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

- Physically perform all skills required of a Swim Coach.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
