POSITION SUMMARY
The Youth Basketball Official is responsible for ensuring a safe, structured, and positive game environment for participants in YMCA youth basketball leagues. Officials enforce YMCA basketball rules, manage game flow, and serve as on-court leaders who model professionalism, integrity, and sportsmanship. This role is essential in maintaining program quality and delivering a consistent, developmentally appropriate experience for youth participants.
Prior officiating certification is not required. The YMCA provides training for qualified candidates who demonstrate the ability to remain active for extended periods, confidently manage game situations, and apply league rules consistently and fairly.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain courteous, friendly, helpful attitude in a positive manner towards participants, coaches and parents, while officiating games and keeping safety as the number one priority

Keep an orderly playing environment where games start and end on time; be aware of surrounding weather conditions and delays or postpone games as determined by the YMCA guidelines

Recite sports oath with players and coaches before each game; evaluate coaches and program quality a minimum of twice during the season (mid-season and end of season); report any inappropriate or problematic behavior, other observations and/or complaints to supervisor

Follow and enforce all YMCA procedures and policies, including YMCA sport model and sport specific rules, personnel guidelines, safety guidelines, facility access procedures and membership policies. Carry out emergency plans as necessary

Maintain a clean and safe playing environment; survey gym/field for possible hazards and take initiative to clean up/repair areas; set up and tear down any necessary equipment and report damaged equipment or any unsafe conditions to your supervisor

Be the primary responder to any accidents/incidents and fill out appropriate paperwork as needed
