What are the responsibilities and job description for the After School Matters STEM Instructor position at YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago?
The ASM STEM Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programming for youth participants enrolled in the After School Matters (ASM) program at Kelly Hall YMCA. The instructor will create a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and skill development aligned with ASM outcomes.
Scope Of Responsibilities
Supports the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion of all members as required by Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Job responsibilities may include implementing program modifications for persons with cognitive, behavioral or physical disabilities, including but not limited to the injection of medical glucagon to members with Type 1 diabetes in emergency situations. Appropriate training and development will be provided to YMCA team members based on your role and responsibilities.

Scope Of Responsibilities
- Develop and implement structured STEM lesson plans aligned with After School Matters program guidelines
- Facilitate interactive, project-based learning activities that engage youth ages 16-19
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment
- Track student attendance, participation, and progress in accordance with ASM and CitySpan requirements
- Ensure all program activities meet safety standards and YMCA policies
- Maintain organized program materials and equipment
- Collaborate with site staff and program manager to ensure program quality and alignment with grant deliverables
- Provide mentorship and support to youth, encouraging academic and personal growth
- Submit required reports, timesheets, and documentation in a timely manner
- Supports the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:
- Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
- Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
- Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
- Completing all child abuse prevention training as required

Minimum And Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in an educational, after-school, or community-based setting
- Strong knowledge of STEM concepts and ability to translate them into engaging lessons
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with diverse youth populations
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with data tracking systems (Civicore experience a plus)
