What are the responsibilities and job description for the Group Exercise Instructor position at YMCA of Metro North?
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for conducting a safe, effective and enjoyable fitness classes by providing excellent leadership, up-to-date quality instruction that adheres to industry standards, with high energy and motivation.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 18 years old or older ! Must have a fitness/group exercise background ! Must be physically fit to lead a class at the appropriate level ! Must have a current certification through a nationally recognized organization or one that is approved by the Metro North YMCA supervisor. ! Must have a current, Metro North YMCA approved, CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To be successful in this job, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Other essential and non-essential responsibilities and projects may be assigned. • Responsible for presenting a positive and competent image of the YMCA through quality programming designed to meet the needs of the community. • Remain current in required and voluntary trainings at the Metro North YMCA (occasional travel for training may be required). • Must be able to recognize and be alert for signs of exercise-induced distress. • Safely instruct effective and fun fitness class in accordance with currently accepted practices of exercise physiology and exercise class leadership at the Metro North YMCA branches. • Must start and end on time and be well organized and prepared to teach classes. • Provide excellent customer service to all participants in class, regardless of fitness level, appearance, or otherwise. • Build relationships with members by listening, understanding their goals and take initiative in helping them achieve their goals. • Communicate effectively with the Group Exercise Coordinator and/or the Health and Wellness Director via phone, email, or in person. • Understanding and following all administrative procedures and adhering to the guidelines outlined in the YMCA Employee Handbook. • Adhere to all program policies and procedures as it pertains to the class and industry standards. The Y: We’re for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. • Adhere to all building policies and procedures and assist as needed during emergencies. • Attend all Group Fitness and all department staff meetings. • Adhere to the dress code policies when applicable. • Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Must have knowledge of, and ability to, communicate in anatomy, physiology, and basic exercise principles as related to a well-rounded fitness program. • Must have experience and training in conducting a Group Fitness class in a specific format. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES/KNOW HOW: • Possess excellent communication and human relation skills. • Ability to work as an integral member of the team. • Ability of handle member concerns quickly and effectively • Ability to encourage members to reach their fitness and wellness goals PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Must be able demonstrating appropriate and correct techniques when teaching Group Fitness classes. • Some lifting may occasionally be requires of up to 45 pounds. • Must be able to walk up and down a few flights of stairs
REQUIRED TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS: • Child Abuse Prevention (annual training provided and paid for by Metro North YMCA) • Respect in the Workplace (annual training provided and paid for by Metro North YMCA) • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (can be provided by Metro North YMCA) • Blood borne Pathogens (annual training provided and paid for by Metro North YMCA) • Social Media and Technology (annual training provided and paid for by Metro North YMCA) • Safe Lifting (annual training provided and paid for by Metro North YMCA) • Nationally accepted Group Exercise Certification and/or Personal Training Certification
Salary : $30 - $40
