JOB TITLE: Group Exercise Instructor
REPORTS TO: Program Director /or as assigned
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt, hourly.
JOB PURPOSE:
The Group Exercise Instructor leads safe, engaging, and effective group fitness classes that promote health, wellness, and community connection in alignment with YMCA values and standards. This role creates an inclusive, motivating environment for participants of all fitness levels while ensuring proper technique, safety, and member engagement. Instructors serve as positive role models and contribute to a welcoming, supportive wellness culture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
- Lead safe, effective, and engaging group exercise classes in accordance with YMCA standards and class formats
- Create a positive, inclusive, and motivating environment for participants of all ages and ability levels
- Demonstrate proper exercise technique, cueing, tempo, and safe transitions during all classes
- Monitor participants for safe and appropriate form, providing constructive corrections as needed
- Build rapport with members by learning names and being available before and after class for questions and support
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized instructional environment
- Attend all scheduled classes; secure and communicate with qualified substitutes when absences occur
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and complete all required incident reports
- Represent the YMCA with professionalism, courtesy, and adherence to dress and conduct standards
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.

Required:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Current national group fitness certification (ACE, ACSM, AFAA, YMCA, NSCA, NETA, or Cooper Institute) or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe upon hire
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid and Oxygen Certification or ability to obtain upon hire
- Ability to successfully complete a formal interview process, including written and practical skill assessment
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages and backgrounds
- Ability to safely demonstrate and lead physical activity
Preferred:
- Six months or more experience participating in or teaching group fitness classes
- Ability to teach multiple class formats (e.g., strength, dance, cycling, yoga, etc.)
- Flexible availability including evenings and weekends
- Education or coursework in exercise science, physical education, nutrition, public health, or a related field
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
