Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Membership and Wellness Director, the Membership Wellness Lead supports a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging member experience from initial contact through ongoing participation. This role assists in training and developing Member Services and Wellness Attendant staff, with a focus on customer service, tours, wellness orientations, and effective use of engagement tools, while fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.

The Membership Wellness Lead provides direct service at the membership desk and on the wellness floor, applying the YMCA’s Member Engagement Principles of welcome, connect, support, and invite in all interactions. The role also maintains knowledge of facility operations and supports a safe, clean, and accessible environment for all members, participants, and families.

Job Responsibilities

Member Experience & Engagement

  • Welcome and assist members and guests in a professional, respectful, and timely manner.
  • Engage with members on the wellness floor and in shared spaces to promote safety, inclusion, and positive experiences.
  • Conduct tours for prospective members, highlighting YMCA programs, services, and community impact.
  • Encourage member engagement by sharing information about programs, services, and opportunities available through the YMCA.
  • Provide accurate and timely information about schedules, resources, and offerings to support member participation.
  • Demonstrate YMCA values and communication standards in all interactions.

Staff Support & Development

  • Support and co-facilitate staff meetings to promote team collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to membership and wellness staff using a structured development approach (e.g., model–shadow–coach).

Operations & Safety

  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures related to safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
  • Support a safe, clean, and accessible environment for all members, participants, and staff.

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support

  • Collaborate with Healthy Living and Youth Development teams to support a high-quality member experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Availability to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends, based on business needs.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in customer service, wellness, or a related field.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Office 365 or similar applications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including customer service and phone etiquette.
  • Current YMCA-approved CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).

Preferred Qualifications (Optional)

  • Experience in membership engagement, wellness, or a related field within a community-based organization such as the YMCA.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Personal Training and/or Group Exercise certification.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The Membership and Wellness Lead works in a dynamic, member-focused environment that involves regular interaction with members, staff, and guests. This role requires the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy fitness facility while supporting a positive and inclusive experience for all. Responsibilities include moving throughout the facility to engage with members, monitor the wellness floor, and support safety and cleanliness standards.

This position involves regular physical activity, including standing, walking, and moving throughout the facility. Duties may include lifting and moving equipment (up to 50 pounds), as well as occasional bending, reaching, and stooping to support operations and member needs. The role also requires frequent communication with members and staff. The ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation is required.

Salary Description

The Membership and Wellness Lead position offers a compensation range of $23.00 – $30.60 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with budget approvals and requirements for the position.
