YMCA OF GREATER KALAMAZOO JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Tennis Professional (day/evening/weekend availability)

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Pay Rate: Minimum $45,000 (depending on experience)

Reports to: Association Tennis Director

Position Summary:

The Full-Time Tennis Professional is responsible for delivering high-quality tennis programming, supporting tournament operations, and fostering community engagement through the development of tennis opportunities within the YMCA and the broader community. This role focuses on youth development, competitive pathway programming, and expanding access to tennis through partnerships with schools and community organizations.

Essential Functions:

  • Youth Development Programming

Lead and assist with youth progression programs to meet programming goals.

Support player development by guiding athletes through the YMCA’s youth tennis pathway.

Create a positive, engaging, and structured learning environment for youth players.

Build and execute weekly private lessons to support programs.

  • Tournament Operations

Run bimonthly USTA Level 7 tournaments to increase USTA tournament participation.

Organize and manage a monthly Youth Progression tournament.

Assist with operations, logistics, and running USTA tournaments.

Coordinate and run in-house WTN tournaments for players of varying skill levels.

Ensure tournaments are professionally organized and aligned with USTA standards.

  • Community Outreach and Partnerships

Develop relationships with local schools to expand access to tennis programming.

Coordinate opportunities to host and run tennis programs in schools.

Collaborate and build partnerships with community organizations to grow tennis participation.

  • All other duties assigned by Association Tennis Director.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range: Starts at $45,000 (based on experience)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years tennis instruction experience.
  • National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) skills level of 4.0 minimum (on a scale of 1-7).
  • Must be able to work weekday evenings and weekends.
  • RSPA, USPTR, or USTA Coaching certified or enrolled in certification program upon hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certified or enrolled within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to teach tennis skills to participants of varied abilities and diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.

Physical Demands:

Frequently stands, runs short distances, walks, uses hands, talks, hears, reaches with hands and arms, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. Occasionally sits. Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds. Running, walking, and standing for consecutive hours without breaks.

Typical work week is minimum 25 hours on court.
