Youth Development Leader – Before/After School & Day Camp Position Summar:

The YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking dependable and engaging Youth Development Leaders to support children in our before-school, after-school, and seasonal day camp programs.

Youth Development Leaders help create a safe, welcoming, and structured environment where children can participate in recreational, educational, and enrichment activities. This position works directly with youth, families, school partners, and YMCA staff to support quality programming and positive participant experiences.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide active supervision of children throughout the program day.
  • Maintain accurate participant counts and follow established attendance and sign-in/sign-out procedures.
  • Lead age-appropriate games, enrichment activities, group projects, and recreational experiences.
  • Follow YMCA curriculum and program schedules while adapting activities to participant needs.
  • Use positive guidance and behavior-management practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program environment.
  • Follow YMCA safety, emergency, child-protection, and incident-reporting procedures.
  • Communicate professionally with participants, parents/guardians, school personnel, and coworkers.
  • Assist with program transitions, set-up, clean-up, meals/snacks, and other daily operational needs.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Follow applicable YMCA policies and state childcare licensing requirements.
  • Perform additional program-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of six months of experience working with children or youth in a school, childcare program, camp, church, recreation program, or similar environment preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Ability to lead and participate in age-appropriate group activities.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must successfully complete required background screening and fingerprinting.
  • Must complete required YMCA and childcare licensing trainings within established timelines.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications are required or must be obtained within the required timeframe.
  • Must meet any applicable health or documentation requirements established by licensing regulations.

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Interest in youth development, education, recreation, or community programs.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This is an active position that may require extended periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, and participating in recreational activities.

Employees may occasionally be required to lift or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

Programs may operate indoors and outdoors. Employees may be exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, noise, and active group environments.

Day camp assignments may include outdoor recreation, field trips, swimming activities, walking, and other physically active programming.

Work ScheduleBefore/After School Programs

  • Part-time
  • Monday through Friday
  • Typical afternoon hours are approximately 2:30 PM–6:30 PM
  • Schedule generally follows the applicable school district calendar
  • Some morning, Saturday, training, meeting, or family-event hours may be required with advance notice

Day Camp Programs (Seasonal Only - Offered hours to internal employees First)

  • Monday through Friday
  • Programs generally operate between 6:30 AM–6:30 PM
  • Multiple shifts may be available
  • Day camp schedules generally follow school holidays, seasonal breaks, and summer calendars
  • Occasional Saturdays, trainings, meetings, or special events may be required
