POSITION SUMMARY:

 This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Bus Monitor position is responsible for assisting with the transportation of children and parents/families between program activities and home or bus stops including field trips and helping to keep the vehicle clean and in safe operating condition at all times. Bus assignments and routes may be changed as deemed necessary for program operations.  Hours needed 7-9 am and/or 2:45-5pm , Monday to Friday.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Notifies driver and/or supervisor of any safety issues or concerns.
  • Interacts with children throughout their time on the bus to extend and reinforce classroom learning.
  • Collaborates with the Bus Driver in teaching children the correct safety procedures for boarding and exiting a bus as well as the danger zones around the vehicle.
  • Addresses child safety and behavioral concerns while the bus is in motion.
  • Ensures that each child is restrained in an appropriate Child Safety Restraint System that is correctly adjusted for the child.
  • Shares information on a daily basis with classroom staff, such as conversations with parents and observations of children.
  • Checks independently from the bus driver that the bus is empty at the end of each run and that all children are accounted for.
  • Reports any information or concerns about Head Start families to appropriate staff.
  • Knows the routes, location of stops and which children should board or exit at each.
  • Responds appropriately, respectfully and professionally to all Head Start children and families.
  • Assists driver in keeping the interior of the vehicle clean at all times.
  • Assists with cleaning the exterior of the vehicle as weather allows.
  • Maintains accurate recordkeeping for program requirements.
  • Reports any damage or malfunction immediately to the Bus Driver.
  • Assists the Bus Driver with pre- and post-trip vehicle check and is responsible for the safety checklist of the interior of the bus, including maintenance of fire safety supplies and seat belts.
  • Attends all workshops and meetings as required.
  • Responsible for understanding Head Start Performance Standards and local child care licensing regulations.
  • Expected to be knowledgeable of the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.  
  • Positively promotes Head Start in the community.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality with respect to Head Start children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with YMCA Employee Handbook: Human Resources Policies and Procedures, YMCA Head Start Operations Manual and all other YMCA HS handbooks, manuals and resources and adheres to them.
Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • The minimum requirement is that the individual be 18 years of age unless a higher age is set by local or state regulation. 
  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.  
  • Must be knowledgeable of area streets and locations.
  • Knowledge of local resources, customs and languages helpful.
  • Ability to work sensitively with staff, children and parents.
  • Ability to organize time efficiently and accept responsibility, at times with limited supervision.
  • Must have the physical, emotional and mental ability to assist the Bus Driver with a vehicle full of children in a safe and pleasant manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
