Job Title: ELC Teacher Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:

To assist the Lead teacher in providing a warm, nurturing, safe, and loving environment in which children can develop physically, emotionally, academically and socially.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLIITES:

1. Assisting teacher with daily activities as needed.

2. Assist with mealtime activities of the group to include breakfast, lunch and snacks. The Assistant should eat lunch with the children.

3. Actively participating in all activities.

4. Working with a small group of children under supervision of lead teacher.

5. Supervising play – structured or unstructured.

6. Caring for children’s physical needs.

7. Assisting the staff with, or assuming other duties as required for the operation of the child care program.

8. Maintaining a safe / clean environment, assisting with basic cleaning duties.

9. Attending parent – child events as required.

10. Demonstrating knowledge of child development and effective discipline techniques.

11. Demonstrating proper behavior for children as role model.

12. Demonstrating a positive attitude towards parents, children and co-workers.

13. Ability to create a loving and caring atmosphere within the YMCA program.

14. Treat each child with dignity and respect. Enhance the child’s self – concept through acceptance and a positive attitude.

15. Being responsible for the safety of the children at all times, including understanding and being able to implement emergency procedures as necessary.

16. Maintain visual and auditory supervision of the child at all times to insure their safety in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips.

17. Administer first aid for minor accidents and complete an Accident Report.

18. Being committed to regular work attendance.

19. Recording activities or maintaining daily log as needed.

20. Preventing, identifying and reacting properly to child abuse situations.

21. Attending trainings, in-service seminars and staff meetings.

22. Must achieve 24 points of approved training within the fiscal year.

23. Willing to accept and follow directions.

24. Fulfil any other duties assigned by the Administrator, Site Coordinator or Lead Teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have understanding of Toddler growth and development to provide a warm, caring, safe and nurturing environment in which the toddler can develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

2. Must be at least 16 years of age

· Within 60 days of employment must possess a valid CPR and First Aid card verifying successful completion of CPR and First Aid training

· Within 60 days of employment must understand and provide a signed YMCA Child Abuse Code of Conduct.

· Before 1st day of employment a clean criminal record check must be on file at the child care site.

· Before 1st day of employment a current TB free report

· Within 21 days of employment must have

§ Signed sworn disclosure statement

§ Consent to a CANIS report

3. Within 6 months of employment must have participated in staff training plan (of at least 10 hours) which will reflect care and education practices that are age and stage appropriate for children.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stoop, crawl, kneel, and bend in order to speak to the toddler’s eye level, to play with the toddler, and to pick up toys and equipment from the floor.

Maintain visual and auditory supervision of the toddler at all times to insure their safety in the classroom and in the outdoor Toddler Play area.

Have the ability to lift a 15 – 30 pound child frequently throughout the day for reassurances, cuddling and diaper changing, as well as supplies weighing 40 pounds frequently throughout the day. Have the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid; the ability to see and read newsprint with or without corrective lenses, and to speak and be understood under normal circumstances; have the use of arms, hands, legs, and feet with or without corrective devices to accomplish the job.
