GENERAL FUNCTION:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool areas.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required. (including incident reports).
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Performs chemical testing. Maintains accurate records as required by the Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Responsible for turning in availability for schedule by the 15th of the month prior (ex: availability for May’s schedule due no later than April 15th).
- No cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, or other smart devices are permitted during shifts.
- Appropriate swim attire (full guard uniform at all times) per Dress Code.
- If sick or other event a mandatory 4 hour call off for the job.
- Responsible for finding coverage/assist if not able to work.
- Attending all staff meetings, in-service training, and completing Redwood’s training, and mandatory meetings.
- Able to administer swim tests to patrons to determine level of swimming.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the aquatic area. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Meet strength and lifting requirements.
- See and observe all sections of and assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Swim 1200 yds a month.
- Able to retrieve the Brick off the bottom of the pool assigned to.
EFFECT ON END RESULTS:
- The YMCA will gain and retain members.
- YMCA programs will grow.
- YMCA members will become more engaged in the YMCA mission.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 15.
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Must be available on days, evenings, and weekends. Must be available to work a minimum of two weekends per month.
